Shoutbox gone, avatar and signature size limit increase!

As you have probably noticed already, the shoutbox has been disabled. Don't panic, I have there's a good reason for its removal. First off, and perhaps the most obvious, is that it attracts drama of all the wrong kinds. NCsoft's fansite program leans heavily toward family-friendliness. Think PG-13, all you Americans, 12 for the Europeans here. Second, the shoutbox is the most intensive plugin installed on AionSource.com, accounting for the most viewed page and the most bandwidth used. Disabling the shoutbox until I can find a better way of implementing it will free up valuable server resources, perhaps allowing AionSource.com to load even faster than it already does. Perhaps the shoutbox will return in the future as a feature for subscribers. We'll see.

Now for some better news: I've increased the size limit on avatars to 25kb and signatures to 450x150px and 150kb. This has be done in preparation for everyone moving their signature images to AionSource.com's servers. This move is mandatory. It is difficult for me to moderate every single user's avatar and signature, and this should make it much easier. You all have one month from today to upload your signature image to our server.

Subscribers have even higher limits: 30kb avatars, 500x200px 200kb signature images. Now is a great time to subscribe, if you haven't already! You can subscribe here: http://www.aionsource.com/forum/payments.php

EDIT: Subscribers, NCsoft employees, and AionSource.com staff members now have access to the shoutbox!

Everyone else can use Flashchat, which is linked to from the navbar!

I've never seen AS load in less than a blink of an eye, and I live across the atlantic. So there really shouldn't be any problem, especially for US people.

I don't know about Flashchat, but I remember an old forum I used to visit had a great one...you could make your own rooms inside of it and such.

I'm setting up FlashChat right now, and researching if I can limit the shoutbox to certain usergroups only. Hang tight.

EDIT: I have to alter-serve at a Easter Vigil mass tonight, from 7 until whenever (10 I expect).

Just got back from mass and finished installing Flashchat. Looks good.

EDIT2: Subscribers, AionSource.com staff, and NCsoft peoples can now view the new squeaky-clean shoutbox. Everyone else can use Flashchat. Heck, subscribers can use Flashchat too if they want.
