NCsoft Launcher wont install

When I try to install NCsoft Launcher to play Aion the download always has an error. The error says ---

Unhandled Exception

Error Number: 0x80040703
Description: Failed to find DLL function: KERNEL.LocalFree

Setup will now terminate

Can someone please help me figure out what is going on? I have already sent this to the Tech support on Aion, but still have no response. Please help me I really want to be able to play the beta when it starts on Thursday.

Sounds like you have a corrupted Launcher download have you tried deleting it and re-dowloading from a different place (where are you d/ling from?)

Yes, I have tried deleting and re-downloading. I am downloading from http://aion.patcher.ncsoft.com/liteinstaller/aion.exe and it is not working. I have also tried downloading it seperate from ftp://ftp.ncsoft.com/Launcher/NCsoftLauncherSetup.exe. Both have the same error

Which service pack are you running for windows? If you're on windows XP make sure you've updated to at least SP2 and on Vista to SP1. These are in the min. requirements for running the game.

I'll look for more possible causes while you check this.

I am using a Windows XP Home computer and have Service Pack 3 installed.

Hmm well I don't know why this would work but just in case, while you wait for your support ticket to get seen to try downloading from here: http://aion.patcher.ncsoft.com/liteinstaller/Aion.exe
The only difference is the capital letter but you never know it might help!

Well I have absolutely no idea what's causing this then. I couldn't find anything except a few people who are having the same error while trying to install random other applications - and nowhere can I find a general fix, except reinstall the application, which you already tried...

Do you have another PC in the house that you could install the game on? If so you can copy it over using the method I described here -> Moving Aion over to my Laptop
Though on second thought, grrr that involves having the launcher installed already on PC 1...

If not...well it looks like something is not right somewhere in windows.

I do not have another computer to install it on. Ku Ku I will try to install that in a second. Also would it make a difference if I ran or saved it. Or would it make a difference if I downloaded it on Internet Explorer or Firefox?

Save it in case its a temporary file issue, and your browser shouldn't make any difference but maybe try IE just because its a windows make and this might be a windows issue...

When I start the Aion downloader a message pops up saying ---

One or more files to download already exist on your computer in:
C:\DOCUME~1\DAVID\LOCALS~1\Temp\AION

Use this default folder?

I am starting to think there may be a corrupted file in that folder but I cannot find the folder anywhere. Can someone help me on this also?

Ok, try this:

Double click on My Computer on your desktop and go to C: -> Documents and Settings -> David -> Local Settings -> Temp and in that folder look for the File called "Aion" and delete it. If there are multiple files related to Aion in there delete them all.

It's your TEMP directory (meaning place for temporary storage), so it'll probably be full of crap that you don't really need.

If you have a small Harddrive (say <100gb) and haven't wiped your Temp folder in a while I suggest deleting everything in there just for good measure. If it encounters a file it can't delete, then just skip that one and select everything under it and continue deleting stuff until you're left with only the files that can't be removed.

Now run the launcher again and see what it says..

It'll be hidden by default. On the top of the Windows explorer window bar go to Extra -> Folder Options. Go to the second tab from the left (View?) and change the setting for Hidden folders to "show hidden folders".

Error Number 0x80040703 relates to registry permission issues. Essentially you are trying to run the aion.exe file from a location (or from a user account) that does not have permission to make changes to your registry.

I suggest checking that your Windows XP user profile has administrative privelages. If that fails, I suggest to relocate the file "aion.exe" once you have downloaded it to a different location on your computer (usually the desktop or perhaps make a new folder for it) and run it from there.

Also, if you are running any security software that prevents or monitors changes to your registry, turn it off while you are doing the installation. That could also be causing this kind of restriction.

Amarinth I cannot find the Extra tab on the top of my folder and Aion Bunny I am computer administrator (This is also the only account on this computer) but I guess I will have to mess around with my firewall a little more to see if I can get it.
