Heres a question: is there an FPS cap in Aion?
In the other MMO I played, the FPS would never go over 30, no matter how advanced your GPU was. __________________ ![]() FFXI~ BLU75 DNC75 RETIRED

I don't think there is a cap. I've gotten over 200 FPS in some zones and I've heard of people getting around 250. You'd need a top of the line computer to get anything higher which isn't even necessary since they average human eye can't comprehend that high of frame rate.

Those videos are pretty good but I came across this gem today. It honestly showcases the game better than any other player made vid I've seen. Watch in full screen HD and enjoy.
Dude is hillarious with the WoW references (Myndflame inspired?) although he kinda bashes the game a bit on some points but in a "keepin' it real" way. I'll definately be playing on release. As long as NCSOFT keeps making content for this game it will have a long life imo. Last edited by Bonejuice; 07-12-2009 at 01:02 AM.. |

The system the Crytek (version 1) engine uses is very different from that of other MMO's out right now, simply because it was designed to maximize the performance of the user without sacrificing visuals. Here's what it does, it only renders what you see, a good example of this would be that as your looking at Side A of a wall in some area in the game, the Engine will render the graphics and textures for that specific side, but if you were able to see BEHIND and see Side B you would see that the engine itself doesn't render what you cannot see.
In a way it's kind of like a progressive rendering as oppose to the Load the Entire World at Once that World of Warcraft has incorporated, mind you it is an old game. All in All you'll get GREAT fps in Aion. |

there is NO max frame rate. we actually had someone in a guild build a spankin new top-o-the-line comp for aion, and this was the first thing i made him test. just to see if there was a cap, he but it one blister low graphics settings, zoomed in and looked down at the ground and was getting, no lie, 1500 fps. again, i will say this, its a big boy game. no kiddie WoW graphics where every single spell, enchant, or otherwise is the same exactly glow, texture, pathing just with different hues. this is easily one of the most beautiful games i have seen to date. close the the graphical perfection which is todays benchmark, crisis, when played on full graphics with a good rig.

Well that really does sound nice....as it is one of the reasons I wanted to play warhammer was for large scale battles....which didn't work so well with the engine. 70-80ish people in a t3 keep brought my fps pretty low ><
Does anyone know if the engine still handles smooth in an Abyss keep fight? |

Well the game is a memory miracle at 4 gigs of RAM.
When I first load the game or TP between major regions, the loading is about 2 seconds. Like, 1-2, bam -- arrived. Then the huge loading crush when you arrive in a crowd of like 40 players... except, there's no big crush. Player models take a sec or two to all fully appear, and you can't believe the excellent frame rate with so many f-ing players on screen. Remember playing Guild Wars with a slightly-too-powerful-for-the-game rig? Remember how great your frame rate was in crowded towns like Lion's Arch? This is how impressed I am with Aion in super-thick crowds. And I'm fully maxed on everything at 1200p resolution, not reduced. I want to see stuff as the artists intended. It's all about video card and RAM. I've played the game across 3 different computers now, ranging from 1.9 GHz to 3.4 GHz and between 2 and 4 GB RAM, and it's clearly lenient on CPU, but makes wonderful use of RAM and a strong GPU. A slower CPU machine but one with more memory and video power outperformed a significantly faster CPU machine that has half the RAM and a last-gen video card. At any rate, any decent and recent dual-core is sufficient, I'd reckon. A bunch of RAM takes care of the player model swapping in hectic areas. Textures, lighting and shaders (even character armor/clothes are colored by shaders) is all about video card. So if you're at 512 MB video card and up, all the better. Less page fetches for shared system memory over the PCIe bridge, more bandwidth dedicated to pure rendering. |
