How Smooth Is Aion?
So I've been watching a ton of videos while waiting for Aion, and there seems to be something that is bugging me a bit.
In all the videos, gameplay seems choppy and sticky. How do you guys who have gotten a chance to play beta feel about the smoothness of the game? I play on a laptop that runs Vista, 3 gigs of RAM, AMD Turion 64x2 chip, and I forgot the specs on the graphics card. Should I expect the game to be as choppy as the videos I've been watching? |

I've only played Beta so far, and when the servers are not lagging a bit, the game runs great, very smooth movement and very smooth combat system, Truly an enjoyable experience.

The game was developed using a modified version of the original Farcry graphic engine. So it runs really smooth as a well made FPS would be expected to. As an example of what it's like, in WoW I'd run at 20-100 FPS while in Aion I run at 50-200 FPS and both games use graphic engines of about the same age.
So in other words, it might possibly be the smoothest running MMO made so far. Last edited by Moonlight Shadow; 07-11-2009 at 02:44 PM.. |

To compare it to WoW, I get 20-30 fps in Dalaran. Maybe 30-50 other places.
In Aion, the LOWEST I've seen my fps drop to is like... 60, and that was in the capital city with tons of private stores. It's usually 90-150 fps everywhere else. I don't know what they did, but they made a graphically intensive game run smooth as hell. So good. It's orgasmic. I play with my FPS displayed just to see the high numbers. |

Cool. Good to hear
. Seems like every time I hear someone talk crap about this game, I panic. I really have my heart set on this game and I'm still scared of FailMMO-let-down-drag-my-***-back-to-WoW-because-that-is-all-there-is. And every time I do a little research on what people are claiming will make this game suck, I find that Aion has already addressed that problem (the last scare was endgame PvE, then I was referred to the patchnotes and now feel a bit relieved lol). I really hope this game turns out to be as impressive as it sounds and seems .That is pretty damn smooth rofl. |

Most recording software lags the game it is recording considerably. As others have stated, the game runs very smoothly, provided you have the required specs.

I've been bootcamping AION off an old Macbook Pro 2.16ghz and a ****** X1600 card and I'm getting over 100 FPS in most areas so I've no worries about AION at all. I'm getting a new machine before release anyway but even still, this thing runs amazingly especially compared to games like WAR which btw I've been playing the past few days - it's choppy as hell. Really poorly done and the graphics aren't nearly as appealling as AION's. I've no idea why it's so heavy, maybe the engine is really old as I've been hearing.
For mass PvP I'll be turning the settings down as low as possible, regardless of what machine I'm on. __________________ Quit. Next seen in TERA GW2 40k MMO

Extremely smooth. I think the main reason the videos you see are somewhat choppy is:
1) They're running FRAPS or some other capture software in the background which always hogs resources 2) Once the video is recorded, they're compressing it down to a small size to be uploadable to sites These two alone make most videos choppy. Take a look at these two and see if you see the same choppiness: |

A generation raised on static and compression artifacts, ironically when HD and audio fidelity has never been better. Kids even listening to new music albums for the first time through someone's massively-compressed Youtube video! Tragic times. Anyway, yes usually the recording software of typical amateur video recorders causes the game to chug, as it's writing raw video directly the the hard drive, and MMOs like Aion are demanding just as much work from the hard drive for region loading. I've noticed in many Aion screens and videos, usually users are capturing their game at lower settings -- with obvious reduction to texture quality, draw distance, shadows etc. And they don't bother to mention it. Do the game a service and crank up your settings for screenshots. And if it's too choppy to record video on your weak-*** rig, at least state in the video description that you had to reduce settings to record. When you combine a YouTube-grade video with reduced game graphics settings, you seriously diminish how a game looks to the average watcher. I can't express how repugnant 90% of YouTube videos make Aion look/sound. These tacky, childish 'videos' with the game's audio track replaced by some awful pop dance tune or gaudy metal, pathetic text and fades. F-ing nyerkTube generation, accepting that grade of footage as gospel. Play the game at 100 frames per second, maximum details enabled, at 1200p resolution on a sweet monitor, using some glorious studio-grade headphones, on a reliable G15 keyboard and MS X8 mouse. Play your games like you mean it! ![]() ------------------------- Quote:
A user that bothers to toggle off his/her UI to record, and uses a fast enough machine that they can avoid disk swap chugging. And graphics settings that aren't totally butchered. The rare, the proud - the competent amateur game video maker. Last edited by Zamox; 07-11-2009 at 03:28 PM.. Reason: Automerged Double-Post. |
