Fresh Aria/Azpha is a lot better than the HoT from the unproc'ed gather, but having a stock of it when you Ascend can make things a lot easier. From what I learned in CB and OB, all of my characters have gathered Aria/Azpha obsessively until they hit 42p in Gathering, at which point you stop getting XP for it; this nets you about 240-260 after the one quest that you need to cough up 12 for -- I try to grind to level 5 and Gathering around 30p by the time I report to get the starting-zone campaign quests; this will generally give you enough kinah selling the drops you got in the process to pay for your skill books and the first cube expansion. I've only Ascended one character with Gathering capped at 49; it doesn't seem worth the extra time (I only did it with a Chanter to get a starting supply of iron ore for armorsmithing) when you'll level it well enough after Ascension, since you won't hit anything you can't gather with a skill of 42p for some time, and everything but the additional Aria/Azpha will still be advancing your skill.
