Why do Rangers?

Why do all the videos on you tube show the rangers constantly jumping while they kite?

Not all of them, but alot of them do. It's annoying, but as far as I know it has no significance or advantage, similar to jumping in WoW. Just for novelty.

Well, if Aion's mechanics support the WoW style simultaneous "jump-spin-shoot-spin" mid-air move it would have a point.

I very cheap, borderline exploit point.. but a point nonetheless.

Jumping for the sake of it is retarded.
Jumping to perform a jump-shot while in motion is a kiting technique, not an exploit. Actually it can be quite fun and dynamic. Static ranged dps classes are awfully static and boring otherwise.

Agreed. Noone likes to play a ranger which moves at a snail's pace and isn't dynamic. Just contradicts what the character of a Ranger is supposed to be; agile, great reflexes, fast, anti-gravity etc...

Most mmos don't let you change direction mid jump. So if you want to be moving one direction and shoot the opposite direction, jump, spin, shoot, spin back... that's assuming also that moving backwards is slower than moving forward. If the later is not the case my guess is that the jumping is out of habit from other mmos where it is the case, IE WOW.

Rofl. Alot of people jump for fun, and don't realize why. It's just the way it is. Everyone does it in WoW, but I'm not sure about other games. Plus it makes everything a bit less boring when your just standing there and shotting all day. I was a hunter after all.

Jump-shooting is an FPS trick which is also effective in some MMOs too, like WoW.
The reason is about forward movement being faster then backward there, so with this manouver you can keep distance from your target while firing at it and maintain your running direction.

in FPS game its much harder to target jumping targets while in MMORPG targeting was never an issue so jumping here is just a ratarded way of making boring class a bit more exciting.

I wasn't refferring to jumping for avoiding hits in FPS, but to 'jump+turn+shoot+turn back' while running to get distance from a target and damaging it. This works the same in FPS and some MMO like WoW (where it is even more effective since you don't have to aim precisely but just establilish LOS).

At WoW hunters that can't kite are mostly noobs.
I've got alot of experience with hunters on WoW.
Pre TBC to get a good bow from "Molten core" needs to kill a monster alone and get distance from it or else you're dead so basicly you need to kite the monster means jump shoot serpent sting run serpent run serpent to kill him without having dmg on yourself.
That's the fun part about ranged dps , not only for pve but also effective at pvp against melee players

Jumping is more fun than just running I admit it, I'm a jumper, especially with my BE and NE toons on WoW and I will do it with all my toons in Aion too

Is the same mechanic present in Aion? Pre-diminishing returns in WoW for Frost shock for Shamans.. well, let's just say a lot of folks got quite upset. heh.

I was on the giving end so it didn't bother me, but as another class with no way to close the gap (things on cooldown), im sure they felt it was a little cheese.

I've heard currently templars have ZERO methods to chase kiters, so if the jump and turn mechanic is as....fluid... as in other games, I may give ranger a long hard look at a possible class to play.

i just hope that they don't do the same spin jumps as the night elves and blood elves. it was initially cool, but since there were so many jumping elves all over the place, one could feel their eyes starting to bleed after a while from the sight of it.

i'll probably jump a bit, too, though.
