I agree with life, the whole point is to look the best as you can to yourself. personally, i want to have two short swords for pictures and things of that nature but in combat i would use the bow exclusively

Well, I think that a ranger could also switch to a shield while evading. If a shield offers some kind of buff or some other tactical advantage, one might switch, evade, and then switch back to bow. Of course, as has already been said, it really does depend on personal taste in terms of one's appearance...but, I think that, in the middle of melee, one is not all that concerned with appearance, especially if the battle happens in the abyss, where dieing leads to loss of abyss points.

At least Aion won't have it like FFXI, where if you switch weapons you lose all of your TP (What you build up with each attack for your Weapon Skills). So you couldn't switch if you wanted to until right after your WS, and even then you waste some TP%

not that i believe in using shields as a ranger i know that there could be times it's used. Who knows, you might be able to equip a sword shield and bow. While using the bow you might still get the stats of the shield? I have attempted in other games to use a shield to kite large mobs away from raids or groups or even in pulling or splitting, but i find myself always reverting back to swords for the look.

Personally, after playing a bow class recently in another MMO, I'm considering a Ranger roll. As for the melee weapons, dual wielding one handed long swords is out right off the hop IMO. A long sword has a long heavier blade and a small grip. That's useful to keep an enemy at a maneuverable distance but, Aion combat seems up close with big hits. Seems impractical if your enemy is already right on top of you. A two hander would add leverage and be understandable but, a pair of singles? No thanks.
Daggers win for me in this instance. They're lighter, balanced, and tailor made for in-close maneuvers. The lack of weight makes dual wielding more realistic and less likely to hinder not just how fast you could attack but, how fast you could recover. A pair of short swords (if there are any) would be alright as well. Its all about the blade length to hilt length ratio if you ask me. My ideal choice? Large dagger or short sword with a small shield. In light armor, the bonus is definitely a plus. A small weapon has a high attack speed and therefore helps with interrupts (if thats applicable). Plus, logically, you could carry a small shield with a dagger / short sword and still be agile and fast. If your kill is almost dead, the defense will keep you alive long enough to kill it anyway. If its got more health than you, ROOT IT, move back to bow range, reduce its movement speed, and kite. Think Spartan Sword / Shield in 300. Defend, attack, repeat... or root, range, head shot. |

Shatter you forget that weapons in an MMO have no physical presence. A dagger has the same attack range as a two handed sword. And since there is no physical presence, you are just as agile wielding a big ol sword as you would be with a dagger.

Very true, however I try to play my games with a sense of logic. As fun as the current 'scrawny pretty heroes with dark clothing and 900lbs over sized swords' trend is, I tend to go with the Rid**** mentality. Anyone who has seen the move Chronicles of Rid**** will remember the scene in the Hellion Prime assembly hall. Rid**** proceeds to fight a solider in armor with a pair of over sized axes. He simply dodges, waits, turns, and thrusts a dagger under his armor into his chest. Clean. Efficient. Logical.
I could technically hit you with a sledge hammer at close range if I wanted but, a dagger has much more 'poetry of motion'. Think of V for Vendetta. As a lightly armored class, Assassins and Rangers capitalize on positioning and opportunity. Its similar to the choice of using a bow and arrows instead of a cannon. One is light and, when used with skill, is both silent and deadly (haha). A cannon is more devastating but, its harder to carry and may tend to reveal your location (haha again). I'm not going to role a bow wielding gladiator. My avatar will be small, goblin like, and unassuming. Though under estimated, he will strut around in superhero-like fashion slitting Achilles's tendons, throats and stabbing arteries. From a distance, he will let out a meager mighty roar and snipe eyeballs out of heads. He will not wield a pair of long swords. |

Rangers using melee is disgusting .... IMO I would rather have another type of range weapon maybe long bow/shortbow ...crossbow/bow...(But it is not my game). I havent play a ranger class out of all the MMOrpgs I played, that has done the class right. Hopefully, Aion rangers are well develop. But honestly, if I wanted to be a scout and melee I would role a sin. I only see daggers/sword being effective against casters and in pve maybe. I dont understand people appeal to rangers weilding sword/dagger, why would I want to go fight close against another class that specializes in close range combat. The only way I would even consider using my dagger in pvp, is if it had alot of cc/root/snare moves. I always role rdps class in MMOs. I had a hard time choicing between a ranger/sorcerer. I love playing class that have to kite to win. Its hard to predict, but more than likely rangers will rarely use daggers/swords and those who choice to use them over a bow will most likely re-role.
