the beta ranger

is it me or do the people playing rangers on the CBT2 vids seem obsested with jumping and kiting with the bow. i hate kiting lol. there is very little footage of a ranger not spazing out haha. id like to see something with a ranger in a group maybe doing some melee, shooting some arrows. running around in circles is for cloth/silkies =p

I kind of agree with you. Kiting is important for survivability, specially since the "tanks" can't keep up with it at this moment. :P

What gets me is why they jump it really doesn't do any good. if their going to kite they should atleast use their wings.

Few things wrong with what u just said. 1. NO INTELLIGENT ranger is going trade with another close range class because if they do that they will surely die due to the the concept of damage dealt over damage taken. So thats simply crazy and its already bn stated that templar dps is higher than a ranger's sword damage. Also the ranger's bow is far more effective than wat he can do with the sword and it can b fired from very close range also so why in teh hell wud u want to use ur swords? Swords shud only be there for the stat buffs. 2. Kiting for the ranger is already its main power. If u don't like kiting that is because u don't see the power behind it. Dealing damage without taking damage, killing ppl without getting killed is the principle behind kiting. If u get good at kiting u can kill multiple persons without ever seriously endangering urself. 3. Cloth/Silkies have low damage absorption because the damage they deal from range is so insane that they can kill u before u reach in close. Now a ranger wears leather and not cloth because we are still talking about damage dealt vs damage taken here. The ranger is expected to get caught eventually and his DPS won't be so over the top that once u do close range its not already too late for u to turn the fight around. So that is a perfect example of how aion is balancing out all the chars. ALWAYS THINK ABOUT DAMAGE DEALT VS DAMAGE TAKEN. And for healers its damage taken vs damage healed vs damage dealt, so ur not going to expect a grt healer to have super duper dps cuz they can fight for way longer than the other non healing classes and so a weak healer like say the chanter will get a fair share of dps to make it balanced. With all that said u can expect the ranger to have a hybrid's lvl of dps...not a pure damage dealer but because of its other skills that increase its survivability the dps is plenty!

And the jumping is just a habit to past the time...so if it ****es u off that much u need to try kiting cuz it is a tedious process unlike where other classes have it easy where they just run up dps and run off. Kiting takes skill and patience so i can understand perfectly why someone wud jump to entertain themselves just a bit while kiting. Its just for fun lol. Sure it does nothing but why not jump around a bit in the desperate hope that u go just a bit further.

Just something you might have missed pointing out. Rangers at aion will also have the sword expertise and to use some skills which need bow they will have to use their dual swords to gain energy or something like that.So damage with swords may not be as strong as with bow but will be necessary to use a bow!
As regards the kite thing.. It is in the rangers' nature to kite and kill multiple enemies! If you are not capable of doing so, then start thinking of creating another char.
ahh, and something else. Jumping is not only a habit that players have, it is also a way of having greater dodge rating. Jumping makes you a target that can't be easily hit.

Is it proven in this game that jumping makes the foes miss more? Being an RPG, i don't see how you can select a specific target in target foe's body. This isn't an FPS.

Jumping can help because in most MMOs the speed at which the person moves on ground or in the middle of a jump is the same. However, this helps because it can help them clear small obstacles that may be in the way of their kiting path and it may be difficult to always look behind you to see where these obstacles are. Another reason jumping helps is in melee combat, you can constantly jump over the other player which can cause slight confusion at times thus giving the jumper a minor advantage. I'm sure there are more reasons, maybe there will be something like the speed exploit in EQ2 that only occurs if jumping down a ramp, or whatever.

okay, my point was kind of missed, so you have a good point about jumping to avoid obsticals. But you never really see rangers grouping. It isn't whether i can or can't kite. Been playing a ranger in various MMOs for 10 years, i can kite, in my "opinion" i just rather not be chased while trying to exp. There is an element of excitment of kiting i admit, just rather not level from 1 - max through kiting. As far as dmg taken, i'm sure even a decent ranger can avoid getting hit in close range (in a group) unless the mobs have a dmg shield or AE and in that case id range =p

And the part about melee, do you think that pure casters don't ever get an itch to melee? yeah, their dps would suck suck suck, but it's still fun. I see casters on raids or clearing to raids busting out their little hammers or staffs and wacking on mobs for fun.

This is my opinion and how i enjoy playing a ranger. Some people don't need to take it so personaly unless i personaly called you a spaz hah, then i understand.

Your asking if they could remove the ability of the AI to choose their targets for rangers? :P

Rangers can fight in almost every condition. Melee is doable, but not our strong point. If you simply want to not kite, then don't, that doesn't mean that the enemy won't go for you. There is only one way of the enemy not going for you, which is, having someone on your team that is a bigger priority to kill by your enemies.

there are a few videos on youtube with a ranger standing still doing ranged dps in a grouped party. but if you solo to max level, you will be kiting 100% of the time. This isn't the wow ranger, where you don't even have to move in solo pve. It's refreshing to see that Aion has taken the right approach for what a ranger actually does.

This is the reason i didn't play wow for very long. You could solo with ease, no reason to group. i enjoy grouping, that's why i don't like kiting. i like chating to group members and joking around. But if i can't find a group, i go solo if i can't find a group. That's what so great about the versitility of the ranger.

I grouped alot in wow then in l2 however not to exp but for gear in the instance.

in l2 it so hard to get a pt, if you wanted to exp you needed to triple box your support classes.
Il hope that i can still solo @ end game(and not needing to dual box a buffer) but i could go to a place with my clannies for alot more exp and good drops.

If you want to compare it to L2 though, think back to C5. When everyone stopped leveling their prophet at level 58. It was the live buffers that dominated Olympiad, and in PvP how often did people box BD/SwS in PvPs as opposed to looking for a live one. Also, in Aion there are no where near as many buffers as their were in L2 so it shouldnt be hard for the Chanters to make their own XP groups

I'm looking forward to trying out the tactics of a Ranger... I fear that my usual philosophy - "Ooh, mob! ... CHAAAARGE!" will get me killed more often than not here. (Seriously, I'm a charge-o-holic. Especially on online FPS games... they've seen me, I can't fight and win... oh well, charge!!! Sometimes it actually does work which leaves both them and me astounded.) I may have to roll something else to control these urges ^_^;; but I really am interested in more "strategic" methods... we will see.
