A Speed Up idea
*This post has mostly technical jargon in it. Not for those who don't understand (at least a bit of) programing language.
So, I just changed my sig, and, being the untrusting son of a gun that I am, went to check the change on one of my previous posts. Gasp! The old one didn't show the change. I tried this a few more times and found something out. The old signature never changes. It only changes when a new post is made, and then only on that post. This means that the site re-saves signature data (pics, text, links) everytime someone makes a new post, which could easily slow down a webserver (especially considering the amount of users on Aionsource). In other words, the server saves each and every post exactly as it is, and then holds it like that forever instead of giving it a more fluid format. I'm stealing a different method of using signatures from another forum for this next part, but since I only know the basic concept behind this as opposed to the actual programing behind it, that should be okay. Basically, this other forum had a user make a sig, which was then put into a reference file. Then, everytime a page was accesed, the server would search through and display everyone who'd posted in its sig (under their post, just like aionsource). Basically, it increased the amount of direct traffic the server handled, but decreased the amount of data that the server needed to hold. This is just an idea. |

Or I can force vBulletin to rebuild all posts and whatnot, which makes the server work a little harder but fixes all those old posts...I think.
Trying that now, lol. ![]() Anyone else have any ideas?

I don't know exactly what forum mod is used, but a friend of mine has a forum and every time the users on it change anything in their profile it automatically updates every post the user has made. I don't know if my friend coded it himself or what, if you want i can ask him about it.

doubt he coded it himself... i have seen many sites that do this.... thogh he could of copyed the code and just put it on his forum.... but i doubt he wrote it himself.... alot of coders these days are just copycat they use other people work and say its theres... its really sad but in this day and age its hard to tell who made wat code wants its on the internet anyone can get it.

Time is money. Therefore its useless to invent the wheel again and again.

Another explanation for the situation you described could be this. Your new signature had the same file name as the old, correct? So after updating, you went to check your signature - your browser goes "oh, I've seen this picture before, it's got the same file name as the one I have in my cache! I'll just load that up." Just hit the refresh key and all is well :]
EDIT: This only explains why your old signature wasn't updated. I just added some text to my signature to test your theory, and it seems that my old post's signature was updated immediately. It could have been Mark's doing though. :x Last edited by Ether; 09-30-2007 at 08:20 PM.. |

I forcibly updated the signature cache yesterday. I did nothing as of today. I guess all is well?
