personally i think its silly people compare everything to wow and whine when it looks alittle like wow.. since pretty much all the games in fantasy have mana bars, health bars, xxxxx thousand various mobs, casters melee'ers and so on and on, i think NCsoft are doing a great job making the game unique and sametime making the classes and interface good looking without it being confusing. as quebec says, a sorcerer is a sorcerer, they cast deadly spells thats my 50 cent of today

(I used to play a monk in Guild Wars, and I'm missing those times a lot... so i will probably roll a Priest/Cleric in Aion.)
I LOVE PLAYING A MONK IN PvP. Its actually really fun (: But anyways - I think similarities that he pointed out were things like just pushing the same buttons over and over & using the same combos over and over to take down an enemy while the game play over all and the mentality you would need are going to be similar.

WoW is not the first mmo, it did not make up the mage class. I grow sad inside when i see people compare MMOs to WoW, it just shows that WoW is sadly, the only MMO exp that person has had. And IMO its a pretty weak one. Now FFxi, thats a game to compare to, it was actually challenging and took skill and and and and..... no wait... That is all.
Youre making me want to rant....You wouldnt like me when i Rant!

Alright, to everyone that's seeing this as a "WoW invented the mage," post, I think you're missing what the OP is trying to say. From what I've seen the sorcerer does have a "blink" like the WoW mage, and does have a root, like the WoW mage. These two together can make for a similar style of PvP as a mage would use, which is very heavily focused on keeping the enemy away from you, not just nuking them down before they get to and if they get to you you're screwed. Two abilities may seem trivial, but these two are defining abilities of the mage in WoW, since their ability to keep people away from them is based entirely on an root and their blink. Actually, that's not true, they also have a slowing ability (chill, from all frost spells), which Sorcerers I think have, too.

Now, I'm not saying WoW invented this play style for a mage, since I haven't played all the other games out there. However, I think people in this thread are getting too hung up on the word "copy" and reading too much into. Read it instead as "Is the sorcerer in Aion going to play exactly the same as the mage in WoW?" and then you have a thread that's worth some decent discussion, rather than troll bait.

I don't think that the point was that the sorcerer is like a mage in WoW. I think WoW was just a placeholder for a comparison. As far as I know, the mage in WoW is probably as close as it gets to the sorcerer and the thread was meant to see in how many ways are they different, if any. But I do agree that the choice of words were indeed wrong, it wasn't so much that other MMO's copied WoW, it was WoW that took the idea from RPG's from whenever it started.

Are they going to be similar? Of course, why else would it be called a sorcerer (which is just another word for a mage)? Sorcerers and mages have characteristics that make them what they are, otherwise they wouldn't be called that. Now considering that both games have PvP elements to it, I don't see how having snares and slows wouldn't be a requirement for a class that can't take damage. All in all, it's a pointless thread.

I'd say Aion sorcerers are copied from Tibia's Sorcerers anno '96!

i usually just compare to my experiences in WoW because those were pretty much the only major MMO experiences i've had, played with GW a bit a whiiiiiile ago. albeit i don't know enough to make an educated opinion, but i'm not finding Aion to be much like WoW. i'm sure some things are similar, but there has to be a standard that most MMO's have to be like or to have to make playing them easy to pick up and understand. Wouldn't it be a tad difficult switch to make between different MMO's that have drastically different UI's from each other? playability is the key, and NCSoft has to market this to the gaming community. sure, making, let's say the interface for example, like WoW might make it more more playable and familiar to the various types of WoW players and lure them in.

Popular, successful games set the standard.

but again, i don't know what sort of similarities these games have and you can switch out WoW for any game you've played, i was just using it as an example. :/

/end ridiculously general rant

I belive mages in FFXI had vast variety of spells to cast from, you did not have to cast the same spell over and over again. Unless you doing the same mobs for days in and days out then yea you'd be casting the same weak-aginst mob spell all the time.

The problem here is that for the majority of people that compare and contrast with WoW, mainly only have experience with WoW.

According to wikipedia, there are roughly 284 Massive Multiplayer Roleplaying Games, be they pay to play or free.

FACT: World of Warcraft is only 1 of said roughly 284 MMORPGs.
FACT: EQ1 was released before World of Warcraft.
FACT: EQ1 Wizard spells at level three are:

Fade MP Cost: 10 Cast Time: 1 Second
Effects: This fast-casting spell lets you randomly teleport a very short distance away.
Effect Type: Shadowstep
Technical Description: Teleports you a short distance away in a random direction.

Root MP Cost: 30 Cast Time: 2 Seconds
Effects: Sticks a target to the ground, making them unable to move.
Effect Type: Root
Technical Description: Causes the earth to adhere to your target's feet, preventing them from moving.

These are the exact same two instances you used to compare to the Aion Sorcerer with the WoW Mage, which as I have shown above, can be compared to the EQ1 wizard, which can then be compared to fifty billion other game classes that use the same spell types.

You can't do it, all MMO "glass cannons" have the same idea that has been refined and refined a million times to fit soloing, partying, raiding, and PvP. As Grobyc said, you really honestly cant change it, take away the movement restricting spells, they will be forced to party and are useless in PvP, give them the ability to heal, the become overpowered, ability to buff, they become enchanters, give them a pet, the spiritmaster is useless, weapon capabilities would be useless because they would never be as good as templars or gladiators.

The "glass cannon" is the "glass cannon", it will not change, so don't compare.
Thanks.

Gosh... Why is EVERYONE comparing AION, or any other MMO with WoW in first place?! You will ALWAYS find similar stuff in every MMO out there, you can compare any game and you will find similar stuff.

Its not like WoW was the first one, you should compare it with older games and realise, that they actually copied lots of stuff as well...

Those who think its a WoW clone, then just keep on playing WoW , because AION is gonna be the same **** again anyway, isnt it...
