new graphics card

Hiya guys,

Was just wondering if i was to buy a new graphics card(NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295) would i need any special requirements to run this card with no issues? Using a 8600gt at the moment and i'm not 100% happy with it tbh and want aion to look great.

Would I need any particular motherboard or cooling system?

Got AMD athlon64 x2 and 2 gig of RAM and using Vista32.

Anyones expertise would be massively appreciated.

Thanks.

You might need a new power supply. The 295 requires a lot more power than the 8600. It also requires both an 8-pin and 6-pin power cable to be plugged into the card. Not all power supplies have these.

As for your motherboard supporting it, you have the correct PCI Express slot for it that your 8600 currently occupies so that won't be a problem.

One issue of concern though is that your processor will throttle your Video card. Drastically. I highly recommend upgrading to a Phenom II.

quad core with 2.66 ghz or dual core with 3,3 ghz

i come from everquest2 where nearly 0 multicore support was given and all was about 1 core, so u looked for high dual cores with 3ghz and more... how is this in aion, all i can read from some posts is that aion is not supporting multicore but a friend tells me his 2 cores are used both equal...

I have a Quad Core i7 920 processor. All 4 of my cores are used while playing the game according to Windows Task manager so I assume it supports quad core processors.

Also, could you be a little more specific on which processors you are referring to?

New graphics card

Many thanks for your reply Tamer.
Just had a look at my power supply, its a winpower 750watt.Not sure if that is going to do the trick for the 295 gtx.

Any information would be appreciated as i'm unsure if it has the 6 and 8 pin capability.

Any recommendations as to graphics cards with my current rig would be appreciated also

Thanks.

The 295 won't do much good with your current hardware. Do you know if your motherboard is socket AM2+?
If it is, you might wanna take a look at this.

EDIT: Wait.. Gotta fix something

There, sorry. Chose the wrong type of RAM just now. Fixed it.

Same price as a GTX 295 - Much better overall performance.

Note that I included a PSU with that. I don't care how many watts a PSU such as your current one says it's got, if it's generic, I don't trust it.

Thanks for the reply and the screenshot archon.

Unsure if my motherboard is AM2+ tbh m8,bought it ages ago from arbico computers so cant remember the exact rig i chose(I should have written it down rly).
With my current rig is there a graphics card that will run fine with it which is better than my 8600gt,i'm pretty much willing to spend anything aslong it is compatible.
AMD athlonx2
2gig ram
750watt winpower psu.

Thanks again.

Dowload CPU-Z and perform a "Validation" under the "About" tab. Post the link to your system here and we should be able to figure out which socket you're on.

I've been told it only supports one, lol. But nvm about that, assuming it's games we're talking about, the Dual-Core will win in most cases but if you can overclock the Quad then it'll be better.

It really depends. While Aion does indeed use all 4 of my cores (usually 100% on first core, 25-75% on 2nd core, and 0-20% load on 3rd and 4th core) some people say that it only supports 1 or 2 cores. I don't really know what to make of that. Could be an error caused by Windows 7 messing up my Core Temp application.

If it does in fact support 4 cores, then obviously the way to go would be with the quad if Aion is the game you mainly intend to play. A Q8400 could easily be brought to ~3.5Ghz by simply increasing the fsb and not even touching voltages. And overclocking is rather simple to learn if you read up on it a bit. Also, quad cores are a bit more future-proof as the majority of major games coming out in the future will support 4 cores.

But in the end, it's really up to you.

That is great; but what graphics card are you using?

Depending on your graphics card, you may want to upgrade to 3GB or 4GB of RAM. RAM is cheap anyway.

Looks like your motherboard supports AMDs AM2+ CPUs and some AM3s, though you might need to update your BIOS.
GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Specification - GA-MA69VM-S2 (rev. 1.0)

You should really get a 4GB RAM kit and throw those old sticks out. Get a Radeon HD 4890 or GeForce GTX 275 and you might be able to keep that PSU you have depending on it's amperage on the 12V rails. If you feel that your CPU is too slow, get a Phenom II X4 940, or X3 720 if you feel like saving some cash.
Just make sure the graphics card fits first, your motherboard is microATX so your case might be a bit small.
