Yes, I'll probably fork over again for the next OS... I mean I've only had 95, 98, ME, 2k, XP and now Vista.. it's not like I upgrade to the new, better, OS everytime (though ME was the suck - quickly moved to 2k).
Dude, just because you work in a computer repair shop doesn't mean Vista's bad.. It's a freaking REPAIR shop, you wouldn't get people coming in and going "yeah my pc's working fine".. you're bound to see all the people with problems. Your view is very very skewed by that fact. I suggest you actually upgrade to vista yourself before giving skewed opinions on it. And Bill Gates retired by the way, so he won't be thrilled about anything. __________________

![]() .OT: So...basically I should upgrade to Vista? I've seen the arguments, and have somewhat been convinced to get it. However, my main concerns are whether or not I'll be able to play my win95 games on them, and if I can't if there are any emulators for them. I already know that DOSBOX works for vista, so I'm pretty happy that I can still play MoM and UFO if I go vista. It's just my other games that are on the 95format (HoMM, M&M, Magic the Gathering, TA: Kingdoms). The only other games I have are Oblivion, Morrowind, NWN I & II, Dragon Age, Hello Kitty & Pokemon (I'm kidding), Baldur's Gate, The Witcher, Dark Messiah, and Heroes V, all of which aren't exactly new...but work great on XP. I also have M&M 6 to 9 installed and they work great, but I'm afraid they won't play on Vista. Also is it true that if I get the 32bit version of Ultimate, I have to pay again to upgrade to the 64bit version? |

If you get the full retail version of Vista it comes with both the 32 and 64 bit versions on it. As for the games some do some don't with out having to jump through alot of hoops.

I'm getting the OEM as most of the computer shops here don't sell the full retail version. Unless of course I could buy and download it off the MS site, then I'd go for retail.
And..uhh...exactly what do you mean by jumping through alot of hoops? Getting personal with the registry scares the hell outta me. I have gifted hands when it comes to breaking perfectly good systems T_T. Last edited by amica; 04-16-2008 at 07:07 AM.. |

OEM versions just come in the flavor you get and doesn't have the option to go with the other. I'm not sure how much upgrading would cost. Though a quick look seems to indicate you can request a disk with the 64 bit version on it for a shipping and packaging fee. I would just get the 64, decent RAM is fairly cheap these days so it can well worth it to go 64 bit now and driver support and modern games work fine with it.
Hoops like messing with run in compatibility mode and aps like DOSBox and others. |

Oh ok...one more thing is it possible to dual boot windows vista and xp on the same computer? How does that work and will a 500GB drive be enough for Vista if this is possible? Reason being that I don't really wanna tinker anything beyond what's there already lest I end up going to a repair shop for destroying my pc (again).

I meant getting a separate drive for Vista. I'm quite fond of my PC games so I think I'll stick with XP, but I will get Vista to appease my roommate who disses me everytime she turns on my pc T.T.

If you don't have a real reason to get Vista and you're happy with XP why even do it?

Oh. Well they told me it was better (user-friendly wise), plus the new style of being able to shuffle through multiple windows is cool. That's why i was asking if there were any real advantages of vista over xp. But since y'all said vista, I'm getting it

I've been working with Microsoft OS's from many different perspectives for a long time now -- application developer, system administrator, gamer, power user... and I developed something of an opinion so I thought I'd offer my 2c.
![]() There are many people who have had Vista out of the box and have been quite happy with it. There are also a number of intelligent people whose hardware exceeds the requirements to run Vista and can't imagine why Microsoft would release it into the wild. I've helped alot of people switch back to XP after buying brand-new machines with Vista -- competent individuals who ran into legitimate problems. You could argue that any case I provide against Vista is "special" or "short-sighted" -- even taking into consideration the numerous computer magazines and online publications that cite the relatively poor take-off for Vista -- but why argue just for the sake of arguing? Alot of people, big and small, computer literate or not, have critical problems with Vista. If you're looking for performance/gaming, Vista isn't there yet. Benchmarks between the two OS's (that I've run personally and read about) show XP wins in virtually every software genre. This is typical of Microsoft OS's. Your mileage may vary. As the operating system matures and technology moves on, not only should you move to Vista but you will likely be "forced" (this is already happening, whether or not DX10 can be "hacked" into running for XP). If you bought a computer that comes with Vista -- try it out. If your computer has XP, I strongly recommend you stay with XP. Vista will require alot more computer "horsepower" and a machine running XP may not be able to run Vista (if this is the case with your machine, you may want to upgrade before playing Aion, though!). Vista's drivers are totally different from XP so whatever legacy hardware you have you'll need to dig up drivers for Vista if they aren't automatically recognized. The real question is why? The look and feel of vista can be duplicated in the XP interface (see Windowblinds, for example) and XP is already matured to a point that it really is alot more stable. If you don't have a compelling reason beyond hype or eye-candy, I say "don't." I dual-boot between XP Pro SP2 and Vista Ultimate. My wife uses Vista Home Premium. I've built our PCs from the "case up". |

I'm actually buying it to appease her since she finds every moment she can to tell me to get vista -.-. Hence the reason why i'm sticking to xp (and dual booting vista). But if I do plan to buy a laptop in the future and it only comes in Vista, I figure I might as well start learning how it works, unless of course the new version of windows will come out within the year, then I won't buy it. I realize it's not a good reason to get it, but if I don't I'll probably shoot myself if I hear her talk about the benefits of vista again.
I don't have any new games as I stated earlier, and most of the MMO's I do play now "supposedly" have decent support for vista. I'm more worried if they can play my win95 games as I play those more often the the newer ones. I'm not a techie hence why I'm asking for opinions here, the only thing I'm good at is making pastries and chocolates (and wedding cakes :P) and I'm very happy with the few skills that I have . |
