Shields and Two handers
My question is simple (but probably unanswerable or rather variable..)
How well will the shield and shield skills serve us in normal PvE leveling? In other words, would using a 1h and a shield be better for grinding purposes, instead of using a two-hander? I ask this with the mindset of leveling with my Chanter friend. So, soloing isn't really where I wish to focus this topic, but it doesn't hurt to take it into consideration.

2H will probably be faster but not as efficient as 1h for a Templar, meaning we will be able to fight more over time as a 1h because we take less damage and can go longer without a rest. 2H will probably be taking a significant increase of damage and will be less efficient unless you spend your money on recovery items.

I think it may depend on how you prefer to play. If you use a 2hander, your going to take more damage, and probably have to stop and recover more often. You might also lose shield skills that would otherwise hinder your enemy from doing damage, so theres some more damage you can take. With 1handers, you have a shield, and probably interruptive and stunning abilities that come with it. I figure if you want to finish only a couple of fights in a short period, go 2hander. If your going on a long grinding spree with a limited budget, go 1hander.

Templar will probably only have masteries for 1h sword/blunts and shield as well as a lot of skills essential for hunting properly using shield or 1h weapons. Technically, you'd probably have a better attack power with a 1h weapon and masteries than with a 2h sword and no masteries even though its base attack will obviously be better. Not to mention that if you ever PvP with a Templar and all your skills are based as previously stated you're not gonna be able to even defend yourself.
If you wanna play with a 2h sword i think it's best to go Gladiator. I could be wrong though but these are my thoughts.

If your going to be leveling with a Chanter, 100% use a 2hander! The lack of defense you have will be made up by the Chanter's buffs and heals, so you'll survive just as long (Probably longer!), but you'll do more damage.
Hope I helped. ^-^

from my admittedly short time playing a templar in the leipzig demo, i'd say that the templar is designed to be a one-hand weapon and shield user: they get taunts (and so need high def) and shield skills. they might get 2-hand skills, but i didnt see those.
the templar looks like a hybrid tanker: hybrid cos they got some buffs; tanking cos with taunt and shield skills, they're clearly meant to be pulling aggro, not being melee dps. they were fun to play tho: the templar was on my 'never interested in playing' list (along with the gladiator and assassin)) but after the leipzig demo, it's on my 'alt char' list (along with the spiritmaster; mage and chanter are on my 'main' list). |
