the sure thing is that the assasin will have bonus damage from behind so the point is to track him or else you will be dead ... assasins are the killers in the mmorps games... their weaknesses are their light armor and the about being tracked lol. My experience in mmorpg taught me that assasins or daggers or rouges are the best players for pvp 1 -1 ... Personally i cant choose .. elyos templar or asmodian assassin ;D

I'm going to have to side with Terp on this debate as well.

A perfectly "fair and equal" game just takes away any and all purpose of unique classes, strategies, etc. Why not just get rid of every class bar one and be done with it? Whose up for pacman!

Though I really do wonder why 1 v 1 combat is worthy of debate in the first place. All high-end content will be based around the Abyss, a mass-pvp zone. High end gear, PvPvE battles, dramatic wars and anything else worth striving towards is there. Sure if you're a "loner" and wander around the abyss you might get lucky and walk into another "loner" from the opposite faction with similar gear/levels but how likely do you think that is?

Unless everyone intends to stay in low-midrange gear standing around in town fighting each other in duels? Or using the practice arena nonstop?

I really fail to see the point.

Templar=low attack but high defense.
Assassin=High attack but low defense.
At least thats how I look at it.

I remember when Bluemage first came out in FFXI and everyone thought they were the best pvp classes ever just because they did high amounts of damage in a short time. It was really annoying >.>

Then I'm pretty sure I would call your argument rock, paper, scissors. Of course this is without the ability to actually change what you picked on the fly.

People will never understand that people like to 1v1 because they like to test themselves without the help of others. People like to test what they can do by themselves and how far they can push their class. Just because you don't like 1v1, or the fact that it doesn't have a huge part in the game doesn't mean it won't happen every once in a while. Like WAR, a game based on RvR, yet everyone likes to watch and be apart of small-scale 6v6 or duels, they're the most entertaining and feel more satisfying skill wise.

Then people will take part in the mass pvp to enjoy the content and help their side.

I can beat assassins (slightly better gear) with my templar, Gladiators are a bit harder to defeat but not impossible (~same gear). Against sorcerers it's probably a good idea to use cloth armor and switch between 2h-sword/shield+sword. (Since we can't block nukes, we lose few good skills including 1 stun)

Personally I think 1vs1 doesn't prove anything (and is pretty much pointless because this is a faction game), since it's based on gear and luck more than in skill.
For example templar vs templar:
Templar A gets his "sometimes-comboskills" available more often than templar B. Of course some might say "Skilled Templar would know to take some distance", but when they have same speed nothing stops the other templar to run towards him.

Along the same lines as this, we also have the "sometimes-massive damage, sometimes-worse than auto attack damage" skills. There's an unfortunately massive amount of luck involved in winning some fights in this game. Especially at high levels with divine stone enhanced weapons...they give things like "1% chance to deal 3k of x element damage" One proc from that pretty much removes all requirement of skill.

Edit: Here's a divine stone:
Divine Stone: Nejakan's Courage Lvl 40 1% chance on active weapon use to inflict 3760 fire magic damage.

Just..... ......................

But then again, it is only a 1% chance =)

Because Aion is more of a group-pvp-based game, I'd say a 1% chance for a near-oneshot kill is fair, actually. With 20 other guys to kill off, and the fact that your skill will likely only activate once...

There are two things that sin's are good at, stun's and attack speed. Remove there ability to do one or both of these and you will win most of the time.

Eh oh well. I think i'd complain about those stones even if they were .5% chance to activate. Every time I look in my combat log and see myself dying to one of those I'm gonna QQ up a **** storm, it's just how I am, I hate things that are entirely luck based that have a huge effect on a fight.

end game crit templars just own face, im a 29 templar on the chinese retail and i already been doing 900 dmg crits in pvp (they dont happen often, but man when they do ;o)

assassins in 1vs1 are just annoying, u can deal with their crits since u got decent defense and hp, ur main problem is them dodging ur hits, u could throw in accuracy mana stones, but that will take away from ur crit stones.

but yea, who cares about 1 vs 1 duels, they dont give u abyss points

Yup versus Assassins and Rangers I always use the debuff skill that takes away Accuracy and Evasion it makes them alot easier to hit also switch to shield defence 1 now and then to get those block procs for stun.

Try to save Stunning Strike for when they start running, so many times rangers and assassins have been able to get away from me due to their run speed and without charge and strike they get away.
