you will get used to it , i love marking even if it is another job for me , but when i dont' mark the grp speed is lower and sometimes careless (they dont' watch cleric's mana , they dont' watch pats etc etc ) , so i prefer to dictate my speed to the grp and not following someone else , cause some times that someone else is a nyerked ;P |

Generally the tank is the leader, atleast its what I've seen during my years of playing mmo's. Of course there's always exceptions.
Being the tank you also know wich mobs that hurt you the most, have annoying stuns etc. Hence its better for the tank to mark then any other class that only see's whats going on from a third person perspective. Myself I have the numpad bounded for different marks. Besides the obvious ZZz for CC I use skull for kill first target, then I mark 2,3,4 etc if there's a special order I need to keep an eye on. Otherwise I just remark Skull on my next target when the first is dead. I also usually group with another Templar so use the Shield 2 icon for any mobs that that player should tank. __________________ Just like pirates, geeks are engaged in a lifelong search for large chests and lots of booty. |

As a sorc, i started by being the one doing the marks in instances but, i soon realized it was the most painful **** in the world since targeting with tab is a pain in the *** and, targeting with mouse when there is 5 people in front of you is impossible since the mouse pointer will choose the players instead of the mob even if its near it. Idk if im the only one getting the annoying targeting problems, but i sure gave up on marking because of that.

keybind the marking of your 5 favorite marks on CTRL (or SHIFT) + F1-5
keybind the SELECTING of those 5 marks on F1-5 profit! you never have to click a mob again! now about weither YOU have to mark all the time or not ... IMO YES. I barely see my job as templar in groups as tank, I loose aggro and mobs reset aggro etc. who cares! My job as templar; 1) LEAD my group to victory 2) keep aggro 3) survive Templar = group leader. You can let somebody else do the marking but that means you will have to wait for him to mark when you want to pull stuff etc. really slow... just take the responsibility given and mark ! TBH, if you let the marking be done in WoW to by a healer... *sigh* and marking is like the best communication in game ... its quick and nobody can be mistaken! I pref the icons over the numbers, SKULL = KIIIILLL, ZZZ = SLEEEEP. Nobody can get that wrong :P |

one of the biggest reasons i like to mark as a tank,
I like to control the pulls. He who marks, controls. and since we get blamed (along with the healer) for wipes, might as well dictate the curcumstance in which you are blamed ![]() If there is someone else in the group who can take the lead (read experienced), then they can mark instead. But usually those who choose to tank are experienced players..it's not a position for the weak at heart. so they often are also the best for marking. I will also often default to whoever is pulling to mark...but that is usually the tank anyways. On a side note tho, when i played LotRO, often ranged clasess set up marks. their ranged (and different playstyle) allowed them more flexible time in the battle, whereas tanking in that game was a little busy. so it was beneficial to have a hunter stand back and call the shots (pun intended). But if you don't like to mark, then there's nothign wrong with choosing someone else and asking politely. I've also found that if your in a good group, after a bit folks start to get in the groove, and marking becomes allot less important. You go from marking every mob to saying "warrior first", or just going in and attacking. |

As a templar you also are the one who has the most time on your hands to mark. The DPSers are the ones trying to maximized GCDs and rotations and stuff like that. You are trying to hold them on you and keep an eye on your surroundings while keepiing a part of your assets unused in case. If you are fighting a mob and another 2 aggro, its ez for you to just select those mobs and mark them quickly (2 + ZzZ) without any impact whatsoever on that first kill (dps doing it would mean that mob dies slower, bad thing when you want one out and quick. Healer doing it can mean death for your party members or yourself.)

The CC job is essential to holding ads in place. Marking mobs keeps groups (especially pugs) from wiping. Some common causes of wipes are: 1. When people break CC because of AOE 2. Target wrong mob to kill first or second 3. CC fails and mixes in with the other mobs making it hard to identify for both the CCer and other members of group 4. People constantly breaking CC because they have no idea what to do (pugs mainly do this) thus making half of group fighting two serperate mobs because CC doesn't work when mobs are beat on and other reasons, if mobs are not already marked it can lead to a wipe. Ads from pats and such a good CC can take care of but once they mix into the main mob they become lost in the mix and mis-targeting happens As a sorc, I constantly scan the area around the group looking for ads. Always try to CC away from kill zone while group takes care of the other targets previously marked. In essence group that does not mark mobs is incompetent UNLESS they use vent and can verbally mark mobs tho its not as good as marking them ingame. To the naysayers of marking mobs, groups of mobs that take more than a few minutes for a whole group to kill NEED to be marked. Its lazyness and incompetence for those that don't bother with it. I leave groups that refuse to mark mobs because of mistakes that others make right before the group wipes. You can ask another person to mark mobs and then you take cues from the marker however its slows the group down. Quote:

Btw, the arrow keys on the keyboard are great to use as markers. UP=1 LEFT=2 RIGHT=3 (or other symbol) DOWN=Zzz Last edited by MrJak; 11-05-2009 at 12:25 PM.. Reason: Automerged Double-Post. |

I only marked CC (Zzz) and my current 'max threat' target (Skull). I am usually actively tanking at least 2 mobs at a time. I only use CC for ranged mobs (just to keep it out of the fight while we deal with melees), and/or healing mobs. I tell DPS from the get-go, if you attack something other than the skull and pull it off me, you will be tanking it, and doing so without heals. The Cleric will rez you after the fight is over. It is amazing how quickly DPS will learn to only attack the skull.
As for the original question, whether I am playing a tank, DPS, or healer I *always* assume the tank is marking (and setting the pace of the run). The tank controls the flow, being mindful of the healers mana of course. If you didn't want this responsibility, why roll a tank? |

Bind your icon marks to your num pad.
1,2,3 to the 1,2,3. Then ZZZ or whatever you prefer as the CC icon. as 4 or 7, whatever. Perhaps a 2nd CC icon as the other one..if you ever roll or need 2 CCs. Thats all youll need...its not time consuming and really eases the pulls for everyone. Stop beeing lazy. __________________

I dont mind marking, but its irritating when you get invited to a group, then asked to mark. Then the person who asked you to mark is on a different time frame. Either wanting to skip mobs i mark, or not being patient and saying "pull faster!!!"
If im going to mark, im going to take a little more time so as not to get any extra pats etc involved. Honestly, the person who forms a PUG should do the marking, since he should have a goal in the run. Then he can also set the pace. __________________ Peanut lvl 38 Templar |
