I d say usually I am trying to balance it like 75% crit stones, 15% shield block and 10% HP boost. But till I gather some decent gear for lvl 50 i am not going to be strict and leave behind this rule.

On low lvl the reason to have block in my option - is unload your shield skills every CD. For that you need good +block shield and maybe SB stones in it. All other slots you can socket with atk or p.crit for maxing grinding speed.

Manastone according to you're play style, until mid 30s onwards I would recommend crit as the dps increase and general grind speed is much faster but past then it depends if you are going to continue soloing to 50 or choose to go in groups. For soloing, keep the crit and throw in some attack, for grouping you are going to want a combination of HP and block / parry as the elite mobs at this point are going to be hitting alot harder and have more spike damage moves.

Later on if your gear is up to date you really wont need any block stones. Also if you plan to group more often then not +HP stones are nice and can add up to a nice extra buffer and emperium armor percentage also increases that buffer. If you're mostly soloing fit stones as any other melee dps class would.

my manastone choices won't be firm until after I hit level 50 and gear up - i want to get to the recommended 2k sb and then everything else is probably going p crit

Not sure if its optimal (and yes I've read most of the threads about slotting stones) but I just put all HP on my armor, atk or crit on weaps and SB on the shield.
But I'm pretty low lvl still but this works for me for mostly solo stuff and the group quests. |

I got 2block stones (in my shield) thats enough for me to keep my shield skills on cooldown even on mobs 2level higher than me.
Theres a pro to block, the green stones are cheap so you get much block with less stones. The con is, that crit (and below lvl30 probably attack>crit, even if crit is 0.34543percent better its simply much more expensive and not worth it) means damage measn ep means you kill your target faster and therefore get less damage. I dont see a reason for hp stones, i didnt meet a mob had that much burst damage that i´d need more hp (doenst mean that much but theres nothing to come, at least what i got told of until lvl48). Theres no reason in more hp if the healer has time to react on incoming damage. its better to get less damage than be able to take it longer(im not sure about pvp but around 95%, if the enemie is attacking you they play wrong or your the last man standing, both no reason to stack useless hp^^)->block>hp For pvp (GROUP!!!!!) full crit, same reason as why hp suck, if they hit you your either the last one standing (means your gonna die soon) or they are stupid. I am strict Shield Block and HP grinding hasn't been a problem i didn't see myself killing incredibly faster with Full Crit
the advantages of being harder to kill since i grind in the abyss is nice. i can venture out farther away from the tower than a lot of other people because i can get back if i start getting ganked. I have played a tank in every game i have ever played and i have always went with defense over attack.. i don't think i could have tanked Fire Temple at lvl 30 if i had full crit stones in my gear. that being said its an opinion thing whatever your play style is and what you think is the best. i know a lot of templars that are going Crit+Atk instead of Block+HP |
