It will boil down to wanting to have a solid group, or wanting to have a group to "just get by." With a Templar DD's will be able to do their thing without worrying nearly as much about pulling aggro from the tank and eating a crit.
If you go with a Gladiator or a Assassin tank (roflwut?), their damage will not generate the threat necessary to protect the party as well as it should. This would mean more mana drain from the healer and more downtime. This, of course, is assuming the classes are properly set up. Even in other games, another class could tank, but that didn't necessarily mean that you wanted them to. I'm not worried about having my job stolen by other classes. People will try, but it will not be a completely viable substitute for the real thing. |

I have no doubts that the Templar will be the best tank. But I have my concerns that it may be a bit impotent in pvp, and I see some posts here and there that the game will have little pve and much more pvp. In that case with pain in my heart I will pick up Ranger...

Slightly off topic, but:
Templar looks fairly viable for pvp, don't worry. They'll have buffs and heals and even some damage sharing, all very, very useful for party pvp, as well as a a skill that draws the target/targets into melee range. That'd be great for exposing the enemy healer/squishies to all your teammates' damage.

I'd think Templars are tanks with defensive spells and high armor. Gladiators have high armor, with offensive skills. The high armor is just to withstand some hits you surely take in the frontline, but they will mainly be DDs. Assassins will have low armor, but with stealth skills and quick bursts of damage, they can fit a hit & run character, and don't really need the high armor.

I am concerned tho about the tanking bit.
because i don't know howmuch gear in general for tanks would matter. if theyre gear dependent asin WoW and when the cap is reached and you'd be able to get better armor. the newly dinged 50ies will have quite a hard time to find any kind of group. and it will just get harder when other classes .. like gladiator could get the same armor with or without a shield and then out-defense the new 50ies.. or it could be like in the cheaper MMO's/beta's wich i have seen that a level stands for an armor set. The only thing i do hope is that the tank gets some skills wich actually makes you want a tank more then just .. eh.. tank a mob.. like damage absorption from other party members wich the glad or any class cant do... because if my assumptions are right... asfar as ive read these few couple of days.. templars will be quite hard to level alone. And if some higher level glad wich is capable of tanking for a party is actually capable.. then the templars levelling curve will be a steep one.. because ive seen these things in other MMO's .. not just WoW.. lol and it makes the "fun grinding/levelling" pre 50 a pain in the ***.. for the templars.. |

but the principal difference is that the gladiator can do heavy damage meanwhile tanking a mob, so my point is, if the tank ability is not good as the templar, the gladiator can actually help in the other way, to kill the mob faster
don't know if you get what i mean because of my bad english ^^''' |

For normal nongroup mobs, a Gladiator will be fine. A Gladiator, a Sorcerer, and a Chanter or Cleric can AoE grind mobs pretty well, since the Gladiator probably only has to hold the mobs' attention just long enough for him and the Sorc's AoE DPS to kill them while the Chanter or Cleric can reduce downtime.
For tanking single, strong mobs, you'll still need a templar, period. |
