So I bought the game at release, but never got a chance to play due to irl issues. My wife and a friend started to play, but are going sorc/sm, they both like the mage style play. I've always played a tank class in my games, so I figured templar. I'm seeing a lot of things about glads being good tanks as well and everything, so I was curious. Ive always like sword and board better than 2 handers. Was looking for some general input as to what the major differences are later on or something. Dont know very much, and just looking for advice. Also, which professions would match? I see you can take all of them, but I'd much rather focus on a couple. Thanks in advance!

Do yourself a favor and don't roll any melee classes. Roll a Ranger/Sorc/SM and you'll love the game. Sin if you absolutely have to roll a melee class.

Are you on drugs? The assassin is the worst pvp melee class. Templar and Gladiator (when geared properly) do just fine.. no in fact, do much better than just fine. They scale just great.
Something tells me you're trolling.

If you want to straight up tank, go with the Templar.

If you want to be able to tank, dps, and group pvp well, go with a Gladiator. Glads cant tank as well, but pretty damn close. And theyre alot more versatile in pvp (group), and dps ALOT more.

Temps still own 1v1 duels, but in open pvp, temp's cant keep theyre targets still. Glads cant really either, but slightly better than Temps.

Temps are just fine for pvp. Unless its ground pvp, glads aoe are competely useless. If you prefer s/b then I highly suggest playing a templar due to the glad not functioning as well as a templar for a true s/b class.

Temp is a fun class for those who like s/b. Glads can tank, but do so in a different manner as they depend heavily on dps to hold aggro. Temps have more taunts to help in the "omg noes" situations that will invariably occur if you pug. Glads are good in aoe friendly situations. Temps also have a lot more skills that will keep them alive when things go south and the Bodyguard stigma will make your clothie friends happy when they are the first targets in pvp battles.

There are a lot of really bad tanks out there and your sorc friend will get toasted when one fails to keep aggro on a cc'd target. If you decide to tank as a glad, expect that some idiots will want their templar friend to tank, because "it's the tank class".

It is true that templars are not great in pvp - imho, none of the melee classes really shine in pvp as they are easily kited.

Crafting is a time/money sink and many recommend to just ignore it unless you do alchemy. I recommend leveling crafting heavily during double xp weekends if you really want to craft (double xp applies to the rate at which you level crafting). If you want to choose between armor crafting and weapon crafting, then go armor as it applies to more slots on your character. In your mid-40's you'll get the Betoni's orange weapon from a quest, which is decent as a weapon at higher levels.

Might I add, that Templars are good tanks, even in end game, when there is NO Assassin present. They just take aggro from you like candy.

AND YES, THEY HUNGER FOR CANDY! :D

True, I don't find it as helpful as alchemy on a day-to-day basis though. For the OP - one of you should likely take cooking and the other alchemy as they're among the easier crafts to max out and they're helpful overall. Then for your second craft take up something like armor crafting or weapon crafting just for fun if you want to sink your money into something. You can only max 2 crafts out per character and you have to do them sequentially once you reach 399 on a craft.

Alchemy on 399 -> Cooking Master -> Profit.

As equipping your temp and maintaining a high tanking quality is costy, you really shouldn't bother with other crafts (I did Armor to 331 and regret every spent Kinah as it is useless without the insanely expensive master).

Templars are definately more durable in pvp than glads, since they have a handful of skills that mitigate pvp damage, such as emp armour and seal of protection. In PvE, templars have pretty crazy spike bursts (Break power, punishment, shield retribution and shining slash alone can crit for over 2k at lv45) but generally they have lower dps than glads in exchange for more aggro building skills and a chunk of heals (which i find incredibly useful, minimizes our downtime).
Templars also have faster pulls than glads and aren't as weighed down by the whole aerial pvp thing because of divine justice, magic smash and inescapable judgement.

Not to say glads are a bad class at all, in exchange for less durability they're absolute brutes, they're much better at going on the offensive in 1vMany pvp (Take a look at parris's videos to see what i mean) and most of their skills look better than a templars. I don't know much about gladiators myself but they're definately an interesting class.

If you like 1 handed tanking classes, though, I'd suggest templar.

...So youre basically trying to do a glad's job. =P

And no, instances dont get too easy, temp's arent effective tanks compared to other classes, e.g. glads and sins (and the occasional ranger).
