Hello guys,
I started to play AioN yesterday, made a Templar which I got up to level 15 (He's killing slowly, but I decided to put everything in crit and seems to work well so far). However, I did not take the time to search enough before starting to play (couldn't wait to try the game xP).

After surfing a bit on the web, I've seen that in most videos showing fights against Tahabata Pyrelord (which would be the top boss if I understood well), I've actually never seen a templar tank the dragon. So I started to search abit more, then I read that two-handed weapons are getting a HUGE buff next update, which prolly means that Gladiators will be even better tanks than now (well, I don't really understand what are going to be the impacts, but it seems pretty awesome). At the moment, I am totally lost.

I want to make a class which will be the main tank, the one fighting THE big boss, keeping his attention while the party destroy him. I would also like to be able to hold my ground in PvP, not be some kind of badger. I'd like to be able to be very useful in group pvp situations, but also in 1v1 situation. However, my priority is the PvE, running the end-game content is my main goal.

So I am asking AionSource community, anyone here could help me to make the right choice for my character class? Based on your experience & feelings concerning the new update (released tomorrow if Im not mistaken), which class should make me happy?

Thanks!

Templars do that for everything but deitys and tahabata

Deity's because there's like 20 million people on them at once and the twinked out sin is going to get aggro, and tahabata because you have to use your invincibility skills when the adds spawn to save the team, and since tahabata is magic based, not physical, you can't really tank it and like 6 adds at the same time.

Gladiators are basically templars but more terrifying to fight.

Hmmm... Considering what you said, gladiator seems a better choice as they seems to be more versatile.

Any idea about which of these two class has the highest potential [PvE & PvP] if we ignore the time frame requirement?

Well this is how it works out at 50, PvP wise;

Gladiators will charge you and aim to keep you on the ground for as long as possible, but if you can survive their bursts they're easier to kite, especially in the air. During a fair 1v1 fight, gladiators are kiteable but with some experience and a few healing potions any slows/CC's placed on you will just be delaying tactics.

A templar is better equipped for dealing with runners (Magic smash, Inescapable judgement, divine justice, and soon a stun break pull and AoE root), they're much more reliant on strong bursts than a gladiator but they're also much easier to keep alive (Iron skin, nezekan's shield, aether armour, terrible howl, hand of healing), most people wont bother fighting a templar if it's going on the offensive, since they're a pain in the ass to down solo.
Also, our knockdown skill is better than glad's :D they can just use theirs more.

PvE wise it's pretty much the same, gladiators can hold aggro against multiple mobs but most of the time they'll have a sorc to CC for them, templars can do the same but have to sacrafice valuable stigma slots, but they have an easier time at bosses (especially some dark poeta bosses) because of their higher HP and self heals.

don't play either. consider a chanter, which is essentially a gladiator with heals, and a class we need more of. gladiators are vastly overplayed. they usually have to be the party former or have some connections, or just get really lucky to get a party. often times glads and templars dont' like grouping together because they can both fill the tank role and both want greatswords.

most casuals hate the "slow progression" of templars, which is bs because they kill at about the same pace as most others, you just don't see the big numbers. if you're grouping a lot it won't matter. i see it a lot and i dont' understand it, but so many people claim to get "burned out" on templars in the upper 30s. like 37ish. i expect those people use sword and shield and stack HP, wondering why they do no damage to anything. templars rely on blocks to get off their burst in sword/mace+shield, and crits for their burst in greatsword. remember that if you go templar. despite being the least effective knockdown class, their two knockdown prerequisite skills are the strongest in the game, capable of hitting upwards of 3k in pvp at their peak.

gladiators are great fun. the aoes are amazing dps (the best grinding you'll get is 3-4 gladiator aoe parties.) at about the point where people burn out as templars, gladiator are coming out of their shell and being good pvpers. but like others have said, if they arent knocking you down, they're not getting you anywhere. their whole idea is based around keeping you in one place so they can use their 2 second cast melee spikes all in a row for 3k crits a pop. the problem with them is there's so many already so their gear is hella expensive.

chanters are overlooked because they're typically thought as healers or buffers, but really they're a hybrid melee/magical melee/heal class. in the lower fourties they suddenly explode with so many stuns. and every 5 minutes they get an additional magic damage on every hit, which can rip through even the tankiest of opponents. they have the fastest speed of all 2h weapon users, yes their 2h so they can knock down as well, and even have a move in 2.0 that deals damage and keeps their target knocked down for longer. mountain crash 1 shots a mage's barrier from long distance. they're really a terrifying class, just so rarely played on offense. they can also solo elites. I strongly reccomend that before you set your heart on glad or temp, that you check out chanter for the good of the population. (you'll also get groups like a wildfire) while you aren't the tank, you will still be wanted for almost every possible event ingame.

I know I became very depressed on my Templar after level 46. Nobody required me for tanking - heck sins could evasion tank and glads had higher dps when tanking. Yeah, I was better for pugs (you tend to need more survival skills in a pug), but for a group that knew what it was doing I was completely unnecessary.

From what I've seen, 1.9 seems to have helped matters a little, but it's unclear to me whether or not Temps will be the end game tank in 2.0. Anybody else know?
