I cancelled my subscription 4 months ago and I'm glad to see that the game is gonna end in the following year.
Quick preview :
Feb 2012 - Aion goes F2P in Europe.
Aug 2012 - Aion goes F2P in US.
Dec 2012 - Aion servers are closed in Europe because the employees of Gameforge are not paid anymore.
Enjoy, and give your precious money to those bas***** of GameForge ! I won't spend any penny more in a NC game or GF.

Most of the good F2P games only provide small bonuses. A person who pays is going to have an advantage but it's not a huge advantage like some in this topic seem to believe. Many also make their cash shop items tradeable so you don't even have to buy the stuff with real money, just save up in-game gold.
There are a few F2P games with a separate PvP system that allows everyone to PvP with equal gear.
As a person who regularly plays F2P MMOs, I think most of the issue is with customer service. F2P games tend to have horrible customer service as many are pretty lazy when it comes to banning gold sellers, cheaters, etc. And then there is the issue of content, most F2P games have far less content than P2P games. NCSoft has always had bad customer service so I don't think switching to F2P is going to change this issue.
But I think moving on to the next game is natural. When you complete all the content a game has to offer, why continue to remain subbed? With F2P you can just stop playing and come back when the next patch is released. You don't have to continue paying 10-15 USD a month just to log on and chat with your guild members.
I personally would rather play a game that is "Pay-to-win" over a game that is "roll the dice to win" any day.
Well tbh having cash shop items tradable is even worse, its just a form of gold buying only through the publishers instead of a third party.
I also don't see why they had to make it FTP unless they are planning to make money through the cash shop. Why couldn't thay have just made 3 different subscription models for diferent players like a light, medium and heavy and charge subs acordingly.

After 2 years and 2 months of loyal membership, goodbye Aion.
I cheered and hoped for Aion to become the greatest MMORPG, bad management and bad communication ruined it for them

While a part of me is sad that so many games are going with this model (I have a good friend that if let loose in a f2p game will spend $1k in the first month - he literally can't touch f2p games due to having to be #1 and win), it is reality that Aion and its design have gone in that direction.
I'd imagine private servers will have a hard time staying afloat very soon though.

Why not just have it free to play and if you want to level up faster pay a few bucks to the company. Simples.

1. How does the gold package work.
1. Does it give MORE ap gain then current AP gain? or
2. Does it give the SAME ap gain as the current AP gain, decreasing AP gain on f2p players.
A detailed list of what is contained in the Gold pack will be released in the next days. We know that the current table is either a bit confusing or not clear enough/insufficient. We wanted to give you a short overview first and work on the table to make it as comfortable for everyone as possible.
I will inform you when the new table is ready and it will also be announced on our Website as a News so you don't miss it
2. How does gameforge battle bots/hackers.
This game obviously has no real system (like a gameguard) to prevent it from happening. Is gameforge going to add additional tools to stop botting and hacking, surely you (gameforge) have experience in f2p gaming.
This is a tough one. As said previously in other posts, we are taking the game as is. That means not only game content wise but also technically. So in the end you shouldn't feel any different when migrating your accounts as you have felt the past months. The implementation of protection systems like gameguard are still on discussion. So yes, we thought about how to solve it.
Also here: As soon as I know more, you will be informed

when you pay to play a game, knowing that at least 50% secure (bots / hackers) you pay your login and play years to get to a good Class, when the f2p would pay to buy what they took hours and hours playing and disappointed and stop ... I hope to inform us with details about what will make ...

You still have to put alot of efford into it.
But you don't, you have gear, you can do whatever you want, and you can do it for free from february and on, I don't get it why people are complaining.
Company's don't have to give you veteran rewards, but they show they care by doing so.
I don't get it, people have gears/supplies/kinah, everything ready, and you can play free for months, and when the time comes a big patch hits the servers, you can then decide to invest some cash to get the latest gear on par.
As a pvp player, it sounds really good to me, because it takes away months of PVE farming WHILE PAYING 12,99 A MONTH to find out that this game is designed to have cash shop items and RNG nyerking up my months of farming.
People have been crying for 2 years that there is too much RNG, no solutions, dead servers, subscription while this game is made for Cash shop items, be happy now they finally are going to make it f2p.

welcome and congrats on picking up AION! You're going to have to weather the cynicism, but it will die down if things go well. F2P can be very satisfying for player and publisher if done right.
I have a question from some guys on our server who asked me to post this to you.
'Will Gameforge be looking to purchase patches past 3.0 and including 4.0?'
Thanks in advance and gl!

Unfortunately that's not enough, because then player has no reason to pay after hitting maxlvl and a company needs to make money out of the players to keep busines alive.
You can just hope the cashshop won't offer anything worse than supplemets.
and hopefully pvp gear will stay atleast bop so the "legal gold buyers" won't be able to pay2win everything.
ps. based on the CM comments the gold account could cost close to normal subscription, i honestly hope that's the case.
paying x€ /month > competing with other players with $$ spent on cashshop
