As the title implies I have a new rig arriving in a few days, and I'm currently mulling over which OS to use.

I've heard many great things about Windows7(RC1) which have made me anxious to try it out, and with an all-fresh computer I have a great opportunity to do so..

My plan was to use W7 as main OS and have a tiny partition (30GB or so) for Ubuntu as my panic-mode OS if anything goes kawee-splash-boom.

However W7 is set to time-bomb sometime in March next year (or so I'm lead to believe); what will this lead to?
Will my computer just refuse to boot W7 and render my files on that partition useless?

The alternative is to use Vista64 Yeargh! version (still using a Linux partition, it's a habit I've picked up).

Thoughts?

EDIT: The computer will be used for anything from gaming to video rendering to school material (which will be continuously backed up).

Personally I'd wait until the release W7 SP1 before going into using a beta OS, though since you are having a partition with another OS it isn't so bad. So long as you have another one to fall back on then go for it.

Windows 7 is by far my favorite operating system to date. A lot of neat new, somewhat drastic changes, but all the things I liked about Vista left intact. They've fixed a lot of issues that never really bothered me before, but bothered some people, such as Windows Aero having some issues with games. Though most issues people cried about in Vista were easy to change with a few mouse clicks anyway(User Account Control, I'm looking at you). I loved Vista and never had a single real "problem" with it(64 Business). I've had no problems with W7 and been using it for quite awhile. It definitely is more efficient in managing resources and splitting up workload to multiple cores. Higher framerates in any game I've played on it so far as well.

And strangely enough, I actually like one or two of those desktop "gadgets" that I never liked or used before.

Ditto, and that's funny I was the same way about the gadgets, hated them in vista but for some reason they are more appealing in Win7. But as for the topic on hand, I agree but Remember 64bit is the way to go as of right now especially on the new rig but second because 32bit does not like gameguard so if you plan on playing Aion before the release then 64bit. But I have actually seen a huge performance Increase with win7 Using a q6600 9800gx2 and 4gigs of ram but i am currently awaiting 4more gigs from newegg as we speak! Had to order after seeing this article. (that i have posted elsewhere as well)

Definitely. No one who buys a new PC should ever go with 32. There's no reason to limit yourself with that. I'm sure eventually 32bit will be eliminated. I have a similar setup with the q6600 still(going to upgrade to an i7 when the revamp it a bit), 8 gigs of ram and a GTX285OC'd. The difference is nice with W7.

Well all this praising of W7 is nice and all, but what about this;

Windows 7 RC is to "expire" on March 1st, 2010, but what it is really is that the RC client goes into bi-hourly shutdowns. But damn man, if you are still using the OS after the beginning of 2010, I would think you would buy Windows 7 (retail or OEM at least) by then. You can use Windows 7 RC, but understand its not a long term solution.

If anything, ask yourself this: do you want to mess with Windows 7 RC client until retail is released and plan to purchase it, or do you need a OS to last you as long as you can until you can afford to buy Windows 7 or hear its that damn good you'll transition to it?

I don't see a problem using Vista 64bit - by now with SP1 even, its stable. I don't get how people complain about it - its not that bad of a OS. Not perfect, but not un-usable - Windows 7 is what it should of been, but I think by now, they realized it.

No you will be forced to upgrade or down grade (looks like losing data in the process unless they just let you upgrade your current copy with a key) how ever you see fit, if one was so inclined to throw on a pirate hat, you may be able to upgrade to a legit win7 for freeeeeeeeeeeee... (not suggesting it but im sure it has been done) :suave:

and here is straight from Microsofts website :

"Remember expiration dates: Please plan ahead for the Beta and RC expiration dates. To avoid interruption, you?ll need to rebuild your test machine using a valid version of Windows before the software expires. Windows will notify you that the expiration process is beginning and two weeks later your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. The Beta expires on August 1, 2009, and bi-hourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009. The RC will expire June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010. In both cases, you?ll need to rebuild your test PC to replace the OS and reinstall all your programs and data. "

Can I just wait like most people and get the retail version and not have to hassle with that? Can I get a side of fries with that too? Ahahaha.

No, to be serious I like my Vista. As skeptical as I was back then going from XP to Vista, I'm still the same when it comes to going from Vista to W7. But what do I know? I only know it's called Windows 7. Beyond that, I haven't taken the effort to do any research.

:) As long as it runs all of my programs without hassle or bugs, I'll be satisfied. It'll take a lot more to make me happy. o.o

Well, my final verdict for now is to use W7/Ubuntu over the summer and see how it goes.

I guess I'll just swap back to Vista64 03/10, unless a Swedish solution to upgrade W7 arrives in the meantime..
