I think so.

When I see male characters ingame I can usually safely assume the player is male, but with female chars it's hard to tell. >.>

Assume all female characters are male until told otherwise.

I do a mix. Probably about 60% female, 40% male (I'm male).

Usually I do a little research into what their end armors look like and pick a preference. Also if class has a big impact on customization of face/body I take that into account (like in GW).

Ive met plenty of females who play male characters.

And back in the old days before mmos went mainstream when i was on a female character people just naturally assumed i was a female.

The problem is that males would hit on female characters, then have their dreams shattered when they found out that it was not actually a girl and gets all angry and upset. Whereas a female player would not hit on a random video game character in the first place.

you know what? Call me weird, but i don't really care what the player is because im not some sort of stalker looking for real people on the internet. I treat a character like the character. If its a female i think of it as a female, if its a male i think of it as a male. Beyond what the character looks like in game it does not effect me at all. So i dont worry about it.

Its all you bleeding newbies who have somehow managed to intertwine the fabulous alternative world of the internets with the drab and depressing reality with your voice communication and video blogs and myspaces and 'hookup threads' that have the problem!!!1

This.

MMORPG - Many Males Online Role Playing Girls.

Though I've met females players before and male characters who are female in order to avoid creepy /tell from desperate males online. I assume males play female characters though is because males rather stare at a arse and breasts if their going to be playing for a lengthy period. Who knows?

There was a poll to this extent somewhere on the forums (the art, music, video section I think), and the results from that were way in favour of male playing female compared to the other way around. :)

I think more females just want to relate to their character, and a lot of the ones that do play males do so to avoid undue attention from real males... Though a very small percentage genuinely seems to play males because they just like playing males.

But female only playing female chars here, for...yes, you guessed it, the first reason I named. And it's easier to dress up female chars. :)

It doesn't really though, once you hit end game content and are forced to use vent/TS your gender becomes pretty evident.

I enjoy dressing up female characters too ^_^ I like collecting various armor and clothing items and making outfits~

Females are more fun to do stuff to ;_;

voice communication can go to hell. I was in an important competitive gaming guild back in the 90s, before we had vent or TS, and we had better coordination and teamwork back then because we had to practice with eachother and learn each others mannorisms.

Voice communication is a crutch and a serious guild would ditch it. I understand some people enjoy just chatting, thats fine. But for coordination nothing beats instantaneous communication by just knowing whats going on be seeing how everyone around you is acting and moving, and being able to know when the entire approach has switched not because someone said so, but because everyone else just 'knows' too.

A good team works like a single entity. And only crazy entities talk to themselves.

besides, theres software that cna make you sound like a girl (or a guy, if you want to).

I wonder how many 'guys' on vent are actually girls who dont want to sound like 'omg a gurl on the INTERNET lol!1'

Honestly if i wanted to /flirt with people in an mmo, i would make my character for that purpose the same sex as they were, just to see what sort of reaction i could get ^_^

I'm a girl and I always play girl characters. It's partially a pride thing combined with the fact that I like the way female characters look (not a fan of slutty/revealing outfits or oversized boobage, though.) I don't get hit on by male players very often, and if I do it's very swiftly turned away or just ignored.. so I don't get much trouble from that area.

I just assume that everyone on the internet is a genderless entity. As should everyone. There is no reason you should treat anyone differently based on gender. Granted, everyone does subconsciously, but in the meantime, abide by either the aforementioned rule, or "Male until proven female."

This is true to a point, but nowhere near the extent you are promoting it.

I run with people in rvr all day. We are basically the same set group and we know eachother's roles perfectly. Does this mean we do not need vent? No, because there is always something that can come up, or something unexpected when you are playing against other players. You should never throw away an edge you can get in a fight and voice comm is just too handy not to use.

Most of my female friends tend to play as males in-game. I'm male and tend to play female in most MMORPGs I play, mostly because all the males look ugly. This is one of the only games where I actually play males regularly, because they actually look bearable, and in some cases better than the females.
