The title system should be fine. Take a look at gwguru. There you have post count ranking, but barely any spamming. That's because they have mods for every sections.

I personally ignore the system for myself. I've used it for other people but it doesn't really mean much, and a little red box under someone's name (who is an actual idiot or troll) only encourages them to post more garbage, not to change their ways.
Given the farming threads of late, green boxes don't mean much either. In short, it makes more work for the mods, and doesn't add anything other than some color to the forum.

If you leave rep in it should automatically include usernames and the name should be filled in by the system in an uneditable field.
