Absolutely no one talking though.

I've never seen the point in IRC. It's very rare that there is ever anyone actually speaking in them. Everyone just sits and idles in the room, like they feel like they have to be seen but never heard.

Nope wrong reason why everyone hangs in IRC is it makes them seem like pro players ! they can like tell their friends "Sry have to leave i got a *GUILD* Meeting on IRc..." And the use of the abbreviation clearly makes you sound so fucking pro :P

It was all the rage back in 1996 but has slowly been dying out since.

IRC was there before MMOs developed better and the chatting ingame became more effective than alt+tabbing to IRC.
Also once ventrilo and other voice chatting programs became more common the IRC pretty much died. Nowdays it's pretty much a way to keep in touch with the community who can't see your guild chat/hear vent.

I found it good in the past for setting up 1vs1 without the zerg spoiling things. Chatty people get kicked too quickly for spamming :D

there's generally quite a lot of chatter in spatalos.eu but i think the reason for the general perception of irc being 'pointless' for new users is because most people who have used irc for a long time are more often than not chatting in private channels with friends rather than public ones. given that, i can certainly understand why a newer user with no real reason other than a public channel would find irc pointless, but for those of us who have used it for a long time it's almost a way of life :p. it's also very lightweight and can just be left running without using almost any resources, thus why many gamers use it rather than having a much more obtrusive program such as msn messenger running.

this was a completely unecessarily long reply :>

Thanks for the detailed response. I did actually used to use IRC for FFXI. But most public channels, like you say, are inactive the majority of the time. Which is why I don't really see the point in using it for rooms like this. I'm not saying #spatalos.eu shouldnt exist, just that I doubt I personally will be making use of it.

We used irc quite a bit to get pcw's when my legion/guil/clan played counterstrike back in 1999/2000 it was really usefull. Also used it in the past to get dodgey downloads xdcc or sometihng if i remember correctly... usually ended up getting a few trojans in the process though lol

Would've been a lot easier choosing a server without IRC lol.
