Was RP hated before WoW came out?

I know I'm labeled as a hater, but I seriously think because WoW pulled in a few million other people who didn't give a **** about this genre of games before, that it has watered down the community that used to populate these types of games. Games like Everquest, Ultima Online, Asherons Call, Star Wars Galaxies, and a few others were full of roleplayers who also (with the exception of EQ) could handle themselves in PvP.
I'm not trying to stir hatred here, but am just looking at what you all might think. I myself played WoW on and off for quite a few years but found myself unable to get immersed in it. It all felt very hollow to me and I lost interest rather frequently.
TL;DR do you think the extra people that were introduced into MMOs with WoW have spawned a legion of people who just want to win at any cost instead of immersing themselves in game?

I think the issue against RP is that some people just don't understand conscious escapism. Yet they happily practice a similar exercise using booze or drugs. I guess some people's imaginations wither as they age, while some keep young at heart.

I don't RP a lot, but I enjoy it from time to time, and enjoy more the maturity and feel of the game in an RP community. You don't have chat channel spamming. You have less KS'ing, ninja-looting, overall the community cares about community more.
WoW was definitely the downfall of all MMO community, there is no doubt about that. And as far as RP hate goes, they are basically "internet racists". It is the same thing as hating on white/black/brown/asian people. Just let it go, add them to the ignore list and move on. They are simply naive, which you can tell from their posts.

and I've found that the best way to get the wowtards(and tards in general) to grow the nyerk up is to simply ignore the "WHAR IS TUTTY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" general chat comments. Eventually the person will either realize they need to ask nicely or... they'll go back to WoW.

Everyone is biased. WoW or not.

I think there is a difference between being a prejudice/racist person than not enjoying beets or carrots. These people openly flame and bash other people on internet forums. There is a difference, IMO. It has more to do with the "lack of tolerance" than "liking it or not". I can not like something, but I don't bash the person/thing until no end like some of the people have been doing on here. Just say, "I don't enjoy it, but to each their own" and move on. Simple as that.
Reading things like "RP'ers are gay", "retarded" or "how their mommies iron their tighty whities" is pretty obvious to see how immature and stupid the people "ripping RP" are. I guess they don't realize that they are making more of a fool of themselves than the people they are trying to make fun of?
I mean, it is kind of a no brainer for me. Would I rather play with RP players, or ones that put "LOL" at the end of every sentence in game? It is a very easy choice for me.

Now however, MMO's are more popular and socially acceptable. This brings in more people which subesquently means more morons in the pool. To put things bluntly, MMO's are starting to feel like over-glorified chat rooms with graphics. I think a lot of people just play to piss around and blow off steam. Previously video games weren't really the 'cool' way of doing it. But now that those younger gamer generations are growing up, more and more people are gaming. As this happens, it garners more attention from the non-gamers who don't quite know what it's all about but think they need to toss their hat in, just to see what all the fuss is about.
I loved MMO's back in the 90's, in fact, I used to RP in UO ( Siege Perilous ) and for about 2 years I was developing a shard of my own with a whole bunch of people. Gaming isn't what it used to be, but there's not a lot you can do. You just have to focus on the aspects you enjoy and work on spreading that around as opposed to focusing on the 'other side'.
My filthy mouth, well, it makes my mom proud.

What I cannot understand is why so many people on this server (in general chat) have such a big problem with it. To me it's all about respect and people who don't RP aren't disrespecting the RP community but those who actively stand against it are disrespecting those who do... and if you can't respect such a simple thing as people wanting to RP in A FREAKIN GAME then you most likely have/will have a hard time respecting people in a real life situation.

Unless you're playing the role of a hapless loser for laughs, winning generally makes playing a game more fun. Winning in a pvp game, when death is basically a minor inconvenience, becomes all about getting the other side to forfeit what they want to do due to a negative emotional response, leaving less competition for resources.
So, at a guess, the hyperbole about racism you're throwing in there is probably making the haters snicker, because the hate is clearly doing its job. You can just as easily say, "I don't enjoy the psyops, but to each their own," or maybe even, "Aww. That's so cute!" ...and move on.
So, yeah. Basically what Project Valkyrie said.
On the subject of the OP: Yes. :P

This person is absolutely correct. Popularity destroys all good things, and MMO's are no exception.

I'm not sure that WoW in particlular has added to the proplem. WoW is just an easy target because of it's size and popularity, much as any large corporation is an easy target as the cause of all the worlds ills.
In reality it seems more likely to be the byproduct of a growing population. That isn't to say that WoW hasn't helped tremendously to increase the mmo population, surely it has. It would, I think, be just as accurate to say every mmo development company, every company that designs, makes and sells computers, all internet providers, as well as the government are to blame. After all, everyone of these entities strive to make internet access (and by proxy mmo's) more accessable to more people. By growing the population you grow the amount of "unwanted" people.
@ Vidrarak
OMFG STFU! Comparing internet griefing to actual racisim ranks right up there in stupidity with Ice Fishing via dynamite. The next time someone physically beats you up, throws you in jail, or wraps a noose around your neck and drags you behind their car just because you RP, you can use that word again. You're one of the idiots that cheered and agreed with Michael Moore wehn he bitched about being censored, of course the fact that there were hundreds of microphones and cameras broadcasting his claim around the world never occured to anyone.
