Thank you everyone for your responses! I see the poll is pretty even, but I'm not sure why since most of the people in this thread tend to be saying Yes to the question asked. Either way, I really don't understand why people have to hate on RPers. It just doesn't make any sense to me. Like I've said in my original post... some of the best PvPers i've known have been incredibly involved in roleplaying and creating server wide events and all kinds of other things, but these were players who got their MMO roots in Ultima Online.

I don't hate RPers in general. I definitely have a strong dislike of RPers and I will tell you why. In a nutshell RPers are usually extremely arrogant and rude.

Now you might be hated on atm and being treated rudely by the community here on Lumiel but guess what... I for one really don't care as I have been treated rudely by you lot for a long time. When I played on DAoC RPing was a huge deal. I didn't play on an "RP" server even. So several times when I grouped there would be role-players doing their thing, and at the time I didn't mind, more power to them. But then when I would state "I don't feel like RPing" when they tried to get me involved I would basically be treated like crap and several times I would leave that group with new people to dislike. Other times I would just hanging out in a random town and an event would start up and I would be expected to leave because I wasn't getting involved. Worst part is I would occasionally go into a tavern and play around abit when I felt like it. But over time I grew to dislike the RP community more and more as the elitism and arrogance was just getting too much to bear.

Now I won't try to stop you if you start RPing and I will most likely avoid you guys like the plague... but if you guys start invading my groups or try to push me out of certain areas I will heckle you in all fairness. Because you guys do not get to own the server. We both pay our $15 a month to play.

If you guys can't even see the arrogance of the posts in this thread dealing with and blaming WoW for all your woes then I can't help you understand. I dislike the group as a whole until I get to know the individual.

Prove me wrong ( with your actions ) and I will change my mind... but so far I haven't see any evidence of this.

This is just another example of someone with a bad game experience that scars them for the rest of their life. I'm sorry you have had a bad experience, but even RPers can be assholes. I myself am not even really an RPer I haven't done any serious Rping for a long long time. I do however enjoy playing the game and being immersed in it. I'm not in an RP legion and I don't really go out of my way looking for RP. I do however respect RP and the right to do so whenever they so choose. I'd say we all need to check our attitudes at the door and just play the game. All of the hate needs to stop.

This is likely a symptom of the duality that exists between the question asked on the poll and the question asked in the thread.

Poll - Do you think the WoW community spawned RP hate?

Thread - do you think the extra people that were introduced into MMOs with WoW have spawned a legion of people who just want to win at any cost instead of immersing themselves in game? (The OP actually aludes to population growth in general being the cause)

Different questions, that, at least for me, have different answers. Also the difference between the two could be read as an attempt to front load the poll. The poll question is leading and feeds a very emotional response from many people, while the OP is a rational thought out question. (not saying this was or wasn't your intent)

I'd love to.

Who the heck were these people?! What server? What realm? God, I hope it wasn't anybody I knew. I played DAoC too and made an effort to be nice to people in or out of character. I could understand if they were trying to get an event going and they were annoyed by a disruption. It's like a fart at a wedding - expect some angry reactions.

I will say that RP communities do indeed have their share of obnoxious people. That's true of any online community though. Yes, elitism effects nonRP and RP communities alike. While RPer's want to be accepted, some of them need to work on earning the respect of the community at large.

I think RP carried a stigma long before WoW came out. I wasn't active on the WoW boards at the time, but I'm sure there was probably much the same "LOLRP discussions" there as there are here.

I think the issue against RP is that some people just don't understand conscious escapism. Yet they happily practice a similar exercise using booze or drugs. I guess some people's imaginations wither as they age, while some keep young at heart.

booze, drugs, and RP. Now you're talking.

Yeah you are right. The question in the main thread was just a general heading for the thread. The actual question is in the thread itself at the top of the post. I see probably a bunch of people saw the main question and answered accordingly. /facepalm.

I wish i could remake it LOL. Oh well, the poll was just a supplement anyway. I really wanted to read peoples posts on the issue. Thanks for the response Gedachtnis.

It's ok, the poll was doomed for failure anyways, as there was no BACON option!

I'm not even sure if the root issue is even RP v. RP haters. IMO, it's more of an old school, respect driven community, (RP or not) v. eThugz, that with the aforementioned anonymity immediately become superheroes in their own minds. The number one thing that really irks me, is the over all lack of respect for another human being, and the need to go out of ones way to make someone's time, miserable by any means possible.

Character shots, insults, whatever, the thing is these cats think they know everything, they think they are on top of the game, life, anything. They hide behind a pixelated character or their forum login, they run their mouths like they are pedigree prized fighters. Fortunately, for most of us, these tool bags, fold like a house of cards when the going gets tough for them. So if history repeats itself, which I'm quite sure it will, most of the Asshattery will subside, and the Lumiel community can thrive. Community will always outperform, Asshats, in the long run.

Here's to the future.

I've been playing MMO's since 1998. I don't remember people hating on RP'ers before WoW came out. Even in the beginning of WoW I remember on Argent Dawn, there was a pretty decent community who would either get into roleplaying with you or just not bother with you.

I know I'm labeled as a hater, but I seriously think because WoW pulled in a few million other people who didn't give a **** about this genre of games before, that it has watered down the community that used to populate these types of games. Games like Everquest, Ultima Online, Asherons Call, Star Wars Galaxies, and a few others were full of roleplayers who also (with the exception of EQ) could handle themselves in PvP.

I'm not trying to stir hatred here, but am just looking at what you all might think. I myself played WoW on and off for quite a few years but found myself unable to get immersed in it. It all felt very hollow to me and I lost interest rather frequently.

TL;DR do you think the extra people that were introduced into MMOs with WoW have spawned a legion of people who just want to win at any cost instead of immersing themselves in game?

There has always been the PvP vs RP discussion. I played on a text based MUD called Clandestine from 1998 until 2002 or so and I was active in both communities. The PvPers generally made fun of the RPers and vice versa, it was accepted and we made pretty light of it. WoW and other games are just on a much larger scale so the RP communities tend to be more spread out or smaller by comparison.

My general view is that I don't care what you think, I'm going to enjoy myself regardless of what anyone else does. I am fully capable of ignoring someone and just pretending their character doesn't even exist in my world. So go ahead and dance naked in front of me, I'll just ignore you completely and continue doing what I'm doing as if you didn't even have a character.

RP has always been hated even if you didn't know it. If you went to the bar and grabbed a microphone and said to the bar:

"I enjoy pretending I am really the templar on my game and emerse myself in his back-story and stare at pretty plants and hope some day to be married and have wonderful carebear memories."

Seriously though. If you know where your char went to highschool and if you know it's middle name you deserve to be punished in real life for it. Maybe like 20 days community service.

You guys always argue the same crap...we hide behind our chars and were e-thugs. Really? If I saw you doing in real life what you're doing in the game I would run over and laugh my *** off and do the exact same stuff bro. It was the same in highschool, in the workplace and everywhere else in life. This is just what we do while we are online. YOU CAN NOT ESCAPE TO THE WEBZ!

Why can't you just ignore the RP'rs and move on? Seriously? I see homeless people doing odd crap all the time. I don't run up irl and laugh my @#$ off at them, and neither would you. You'd ignore a rpr and move on.
