I've played my gladiator close to 40 and I'm getting a bit bored with him. I will continue to level him to 50 but I'd like to level an alt just in case I get to 50 and I don't like him. To be honest, I've been let down by my gladiator a lot.

I've been looking at either a ranger or an assassin because I love the play styles. Both seem to be able to take care of themselves, both hit hard and have great dps. Both also require some skill to play and I really enjoy sitting down and learning the class inside and out.

I just don't know what class to pick. I love doing melee damage/dps, but the rangers ability to solo and CC really intrigues me. I guess I just need suggestions of which to go. I want to be able to solo, hit hard and fast. Is the CC ability of the ranger worth it to overlook the great dps/damage of the assassin? I hear that assassins have a ton of keybindings but their damage isn't that based upon luck and that rangers do go through mana pots a lot more.

Any suggestions would be great. I need a vacation from my gladiator.

Ranger if you want to have fun in large scale PvP.

I'm a 31 Assassin and I feel like I made the wrong choice. Why? I like big battles, and as a squishy melee, I can barely participate in them. Stealthing up and jumping someone just gets me focused on and killed instantly. I can't attack safely from behind the crowds, I can't attack from the air.

Someone will probably tell me to L2P or pick my battles, but what does it mean to 'pick my battles'? It means to make sure they're alone, lower level, or already half dead.

I'm a Gladiator too, I thought about making an Assasin alt but honestly the whole point of an alt is to get away from all the perils of your class and try something different... something not melee (honestly Melee really gets the short end of the stick in this game)

Made a Ranger alt and am LOVING it. It's nice not being a cripple in PvP... Glad up to 38, Ranger at 36 atm :)

As a ranger do you miss melee at all? I guess what draws me to an assassin is the DW and the quick attacks.

I did during the first few levels. Then you get the Stunning Shot chain and you go from plinkplinkplink to WHACKWHACK... to put it simply :) (critting for 1.5K at level 19!)

Haha it is very tempting. I just hope I won't regret not rolling a Sin though.

/waves, 50 Sin here.

Kinda wish I rolled a ranger at times, so leveling a ranger alt.

Since you have a gladiator, I'd go ranger and not look back - at least for now. =P
Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same.

im having the same problem, although i think im going to stick with my 30 ranger as opposed to my 27 assassin, i like the high burst and CCs and sins seem like they have to have a lot of keybindings, and i am not a fan of that so much

i ll just copy paste my post on another thread, dont wanna write the whole **** again..

anyways, i have played all classes to 26++ and from my personal experience i have to say:
with sm i had hard times getting aggro from mobs/stealing aggro from tank by outdpsing, but my sm gear sux too
with gladi it was quite similar, but easier than sm (got the 26 blue spy quest weapon, asmo)
chanter, no discussion abt it , even though i could be a very good offtank (nochsana ofc)
sorc, getting aggro was very very easy..
cleric, i did sometimes dmg, but well i wont get the aggro unless i rlly want it (overhealing + the 10% procc skill)

and now comes the 2 uber dps chars

ranger : before i had the 19 bc green bow, where my dps was quite average, but after getting the lvl 26 spy quest bow, i m always stealing the tanks aggro by doing crazy dmg

sin: my sin got both lvl 24 dagger and sword, but green =(, had very hard time doing dmg with my sin, i thought sin sucks, cuz i was just doing average dmg (bit better than chanter maybe)
after i figured out how freaking imported those 25 stigma skills are and also how necesary buffs are my sin just became the dmg god in every run, no matter how good the tank is, i get the aggro every everytime, if i want it and i mostly do
i read abt ppl saying sins are bad at low lvls and start getting better at 34+..
so atm my sin is just the dmg god with green weapons, what will happen if i get blue/gold weaps and 34+ ??
peace dudes

i did some duels with vs my grp members, note that by dueling, it was never possible for me to get into stealth and open first, i always got rooted/w.e. at the beginning
vs sm i raped him like 4:2 favoring me (if i didnt do any mistakes it could be better)
vs templer 1:0
vs cleric 1:1
vs gladiator 1:3 =( (only the last duel i started kiting him)

ok so sins arent made for big scale pvp but for raping single players or grp of lows..
if you get the opener which you ll mostly do, you have won..
dont know how it ll become on higher lvls, but since my sorc is almost 40, i dont think changes would be that huge for sins, their ownage is always

Sins really are made for large scale PvP, but it depends on your play style.

It seems like many people get the idea that an assassin isn't good in large scale PvP because they run alone into the enemy's lines and die. They think "well if I had range I could stand at my own line and fire away, therefore sins are bad."

You don't have to play an assassin like a lemming. Getting over the urge to charge into certain death alone and unsupported might change your results with the class. If you are patient, you'll get your chances to attack and make a difference. Makes sense for the theme of the class, doesn't it? If you don't like that style of play, then you should not choose the class.

Sin = way more dps. +30% compared to ranger.
RNG = ranged combat and lots of rng factors.

By Lots of RNG factors he actually means 2 skills that are affected by RNG out of a roster of around 20

Ranger = Fun Fun

Rolled a Sorc - Snore
Rolled a Chanter - Fun
Rolled a Sin - Snore
Rolled a Ranger - FUN FUN FUN, got stunning shot, critted for 1.5k and never turned back, The two RNG are usually quite favourable with their luck and even when they are not it is unlikely it is going to kill you ;)

theres not a single melee who is awesome in huge battles unless the mess has started (talkin about asmo's elyos all mixed up in big battle)
assassin does fine in big scaled battles aslong u dont try to be hero and jump in middle of 10 asmo's to kill that sorc or w/e ull just have to wait like every single melee till asmos/elyos are close enough so melee's do no longer have to close a huge gap to be able to hit that single asmo

rangers are fine imo but they do not have steady damage its going up and down
sins are fine aswell both can do w/e they want solo sins are a stun machine
ranger is a kite machine

ranger is easy mode of assassin
assassin is harder to play cus ur melee melee's always have harder time in every single mmo
but for some reason my sin wasnt so terribad as my ranger is in taking hits :P if a melee class manages to catch up with my ranger its gg ur dead while my sin could take alot more hits

I'm sure you've made up your mind by now as this thread is over two months old now... but for future readers, I agree with a lot of what people are saying, ranger is likely the best bet for you and those in your situation for a change of pace from a melee like your glad.

I would warn though, people saying "omg ranger crits so huge!" yes it is pretty cool, but for me it's just frustrating mostly. One shot you'll hit 2500 damage, next time you'll wish you'd just let the auto attack run cause you would have done more damage. on my 32 ranger using self buffs ect the damage range on those skills is 100-2800, so I like to think of it as an average around 1400, and that's not better than the sin with the same buffs popping off sneak attack damage is either 1200 or 2400, one or the other. Ranger RNG is just really frustrating for me.

Other parts about the ranger I do like, kiting, the knockback stun (well for solo and pvp, in group pve this is a pain) and damage is pretty good and from range is nice. Mau form for bosses and you'll do pretty sick dps.

The sin's dps and performance varies a lot more with your attitude. To get the most out of a sin you have to be very active, quick button sequences, know your positioning and know your enemies and what/when to evade/twist, use your self buffs watching timers ect. So when you're not wanting to go all out, you'll see a much bigger dip as a sin than as a ranger. (though how a lazy sin compares to an active ranger I can't really say)
