To gain entry to this instance, you must first complete the campaign quest Lepharist Poison Research and also complete the first couple steps of Creating a Monster.
Once you have brought Lapontos's Journal to Barzon in New Heiron Gate, proceed to the entrance of the Aetherogenetics Lab located in the Lepharist Research Center.
Aetherogenetics Lab location.
Guarding the entrance are a gaggle of Lepharists and a level 41 elite named Gatekeeper Kirrin.
The entrance to the Aetherogenetics Lab instance.
Fight your way past Kirrin or simple CC him and use the entrance. Killing Kirrin is not required to enter the instance nor is it part of Creating a Monster.
Once inside, you will first go down the entrance ramp which leads you to two doors. Open both doors (since they lead to the same room) so you can use both sets of stairs to break line of sight while your Templar gets hate back.
The first room has 4 elite Lepharists and one Gatekeeper. The two single mobs guarding the left and right doors can easily be pulled and killed individually. The other two patrol in a linear fashion and it is wise to wait for them to move away from the Gatekeeper before beginning the fight. CC or off-tank one while you kill the other then take down the Gatekeeper once he is alone.
You will notice that the large door before you is locked. You will need a key to pass through to get to the Bio Experiment Lab. For now, take the open door to the left. There are two one-man patrols in this room. The first of these patrols walks right past the open door you just walked through, so wait for it and take it out first. There is another single mob before you go down the stairs. Once those two are down, your next two encounters will be double pulls. Each of these pulls has a medic that will heal itself and it's partner as well as dispell any CC you use on the other mob, so I've found it best to have your Sorcerer chain CC the medic while you pound down the other. If you don't have a sorcerer in your party, use your makeshift CC (fear, sleep arrow) to keep the medic busy.
Once you've killed the two duos with the medics, locate the second patrol. This patrol travels between the two openings in the wall in front of you and can easily be pulled without aggroing any of the other mobs around. Use the wall to break line of sight if you're having troubles getting him to close in on you.
This will be a two mob fight, so have your CC or battle plan ready.
This brings you to your first hero fight of the Labs. Head Chef Pamsey is not a required fight, but they do have a chance of dropping some of the level 42 Researcher's gear.
Head Chef Pamsey isn't a required kill, but can drop skillbooks and Researcher's Armor.
Pamsey is one of those scary fast NPCs so if things go bad, running away is probably not a viable option, but otherwise she is a typical mob with nothing overly difficult in her arsenal. Chain CC the add while everyone takes Pamsey down or have your tank hold Pamsey while the rest of the group takes down the add.
On the other side of the broken wall (to the left of Pamsey when looking at the distanced screenshot above) there is another two-pull group. Beyond them is the Keykeeper to gain access to the Old Library. This is another two-pull hero and the add mob is a ranged caster. If you have a sorcerer, I suggest pulling the hero mob while chain sleeping/treeing the caster. The caster will have to run to you to get in-range and in that time, your sorcerer can re-apply their CC. Otherwise in this instance, rooting works if you can stay out of range.
The Keykeeper holds the key to the Old Library.
Notice the slept add in the background and the distance to it. Once you have defeated the hero, you can proceed back to the first room of the Aetherogenetics Lab, where the two sealed doors are. The door directly across the room from the door you just exited is your destination. Unlock the door and proceed through.
One of the many locked doors found within the Labs.
A lot of how well you do in the Old Library comes down to careful planning as well as luck. You are able to single pull a couple of the mobs, but due to the close proximity of them you have to be careful. Specifically watch out for an attack called Pretor Transformation. This will transform you into a pretor and put you in a fear state, causing you to run away in a random direction. If you run deeper into the library, there is a good chance you will aggro one or more extra mobs.
The key holder in the Old Library is one of two mobs. It will either be the Expert Lab Scholar or the rare spawn Librarian Selima. If you have the normal hero spawn, you should be able to handle it just as you handled Pamsey or the first key holder. Selima will be a bit different. Selima has twice the aggro radius of the normal hero which also happens to encompass two elites.
Attacking any of these three will aggro the whole bunch. Have your party wait on the entrance ramp and run to them. With careful tactics, you can get the elites to reset and fight Selima alone!
If you currently have the quest [Group] Rules of Alchemy and Life the book that you need is on the shelf next to where you killed the hero for the key. Also, check this room for a treasure box that sometimes spawns in it (located above the southern most arrow on the above image.
Now that you have the second key, you can proceed towards the Bio Experimentation Lab. Proceed through the door and kill the two elites on the other side. Down the ramp you will find two pretor guarding two different unlocked doors.
An important thing to remember at this point in the instance is the Pretors do NOT link. Even if two are patrolling together, your Templar can use Inescapable Judgment or a regular taunt to pull them one at a time.
Left or right, either way gets you near the same result.
From this point you have a choice to go left or right, but both paths lead you to the same room. The left room has mudthorns and a Hungry Mudthorn, which holds the key for it's door. The right room has pretors and the Pretor Key Keeper, which has the key to unlock it's door. Taking the mudthorn path gives you a few extra Rotrons to fight in the next room but doesn't overall affect your journey. There is also a random treasure chest spawn in the mudthorn room.
Passing through one of the above rooms takes you into the Bio Experiment Lab.
Destroy these quest devices with ranged attacks to avoid aggro.
The notable thing about this room are the Bio Experiment Devices, which are the class cases on the right of the above screenshot each housing an experiment victim. The devices only have 20hp, but each hit only deals 1 damage. Have your casters and rangers attack the cases from afar to destroy 3 of them for Creating a Monster or go gung-ho on them and kill the NPC within after it aggros you- your choice. Be aware that this room and the ramp leading to the next room have two sets of two pretor patrols. Once again note that they do not link, so pull them one at a time but be aware of where the second patrol is. While they do not link, they will attack you if they get close enough.
Head down the ramp once you've cleared the way and destroyed the devices. You are facing Rotrons in this room once again. To make fighting the Rotrons faster, have your Templar save their Inescapable Judgment to interrup the Rotron's "recovery" skill that they use between 25% and 50% health.
Once you've cleared a path to The Gatekeeper, killing his is not a very difficult task. He is a regular elite like the others you've fought already.
The Gatekeeper is much like the others you've fought already.
To unlock the door that The Gatekeeper guards, you need to kill the hero mob just beyond him. The Key Eater is a Rotron hero mob who is pretty cut and dry to fight. This fight will be very similar to the other hero mobs you've fought thus far in the instance with the exception of the "recovery" skill he uses. It is difficult to interrupt a hero class mob and therefore he is very likely complete the cast. If someone from you party has the ability to silence him while casting, that has been known to work better than other interrupt attempts.
Key Eater holds the key to the final room of the Labs.
Before you unlock the final door, have your party rest up. The Perfected Pretor in the next room is essentially three mobs in one with a large aggro radius. Once the door is opened, your group is open to attack. Once you kill his first form, a Mudthorn will spawn, followed by a Rotron when you kill the Mudthorn. It is not a difficult fight, but it can be long enough to hurt a party that isn't prepared for it's length.
The Perfected Pretor is really three mobs in one. After each death he will take on a new form.
You've come a long way, but now is where the real battle begins. Your last opponent is RM-78c and he's a quick one.
RM-78c stands waiting for your final confrontation.
RM-78c is a very fast hero mob and will break aggro from your Templar at certain points during the fight to engrave patterns on another target. During this time it is important for the Templar to try and build up as much hate as possible for when RM-78c breaks off of it's current target. He will use redirect attacks as well as other powerful abilities, so keep your Steel Wall of Defense and/or Unwavering Devotion ready in an attempt to prevent the spin. RM-78c has a chance to drop skillbooks, blue level 42 weapons, and Researcher's Armor, so have your Spirit Master hit him with an Erosion skill and best of luck with your loot!
After the fight has ended, a NPC slime will appear briefly and turn random party members into a clone of RM-78c temporarily, then disappear.
The last thing to do in the instance then is to Search the Lepharist's Secret Safe. This is located on a desk to the right of where RM-78c was standing, up the stairs.
Search the Lepharist's Secret Safe for Creating a Monster.
Congratulations! You've finished the Aetherogenetics Lab instance. All that is left for Creating a Monster is to report the results to Perento in New Heiron Gate. You are able to re-enter the Labs immediately after completing it, so if you're attempting to farm skill books, researcher armor, or blue weapons, you can.
This concludes the Aetherogenetics Labs guide for now. This guide will be updated with more quests pertaining to the Labs, but we wanted to get the core context up first. If you see any errors, omissions, or changes, please let us know!
